Roadrunner

Haiku and commentary

a roadrunner sprints by,

disappears with lightning speed —

as the world stands still

I am fascinated by many birds, but perhaps the Roadrunner is at the top of the list.

The Roadrunner is a speedy bird of the cuckoo family and can run as fast as 26 MPH.

I grew up with the Roadrunner outsmarting Wile E. Coyote and believed that the Roadrunner had superior intelligence. I still do.

When I lived in Palm Springs, I was amazed to see so many of these lightning-quick birds up close. Of course, I could never snap a clear picture of them.

They have only two toes on their feet.

They make various sounds — coos, whirrs, buzzes, and clacking.

Ancient indigenous people consider the Roadrunner to be good luck. They also symbolize strength, courage, speed, and endurance.

I am honoring them with my haiku. As they sprint by us, we can only watch in awe.

What are your thoughts on this unique bird?
