Abstract

ruz trip was in the back of my mind. Technically, this beach trip was my first venture out as a single mom — but I was still in survival mode back then. Road Trip to Soul-Cleanse City

Six Word Photo Story: Freestyle

Mixed emotions and sunsets in oceans.

I remember this day: Exactly one year ago, I packed up my kids and drove out to visit our friends in Santa Cruz, CA. When I wrote my most recent piece on camping in the Redwoods, this Santa Cruz trip was in the back of my mind. Technically, this beach trip was my first venture out as a single mom — but I was still in survival mode back then. Nevertheless, I remember the heaviness of our emotions lifting when we all got to the beach and started running around the shoreline. I think it was the first time I exhaled since I left my ex-husband. I saw my kids’ carefree smiles and laughter as they played a game of beach-wave tag with their friends. And all felt right with the world once again.

I love quality time with my kids. And I love the beach, too. So, put those two together — and I’ll meet you in Soul-Cleanse City with my light-as-foamy-surf crew.
