Road Trip!

What says “summer” more than a road trip?

Design by K. Kumar — Used with permission

For our August banner, I chose a design, rather than a photo. Kiran Kumar’s beach scene is perfect as summer winds down and last-minute getaways are enjoyed before students return to classes. Thank you, Kiran!

Looking at Kiran’s artwork, I thought of all the families and students squeezing in a few more beach trips before fall. The other day I wrote a response to the July W&W prompt, The Music of Summer, that wasn’t only about music but also about my first solo road trip after graduating high school.

Who doesn’t love a road trip? More casual than formal vacations, sometimes spur-of-the-moment, and usually involving driving rather than other modes of transportation, road trips are less stressful and usually much less expensive.

Jump in the car and go!

My best friend and I sometimes go on road trips. She drives and I take photos. We have a general destination but no specific route. Short day trips. Lots of talking and laughing.

When I was married before and living in Georgia, money was tight and my husband and I often took day-long driving trips to the mountains. We’d leave early and arrive home late, never spending much more than the cost of gas.

Some road trips are longer. When a co-worker was a child, she and her family drove from Florida to California — every summer.

What road trip memories do you have? Are you planning a road trip?

All Weeds and Wildflowers are invited to respond to the August prompt, Road Trip! Stories, poetry, artwork, photography — whatever creative medium you choose.
