Rising Above Challenges: A Mother and Son’s Journey of Triumph and Inspiration.
Graduating with Honors Despite a Diagnosis of Autism!
Sammy’s mother writes about her son’s diagnosis:
“My son, Sammy Martinez, graduated with honors from South Texas College in McAllen, Texas, on February 5th, 2024.
As a proud mother, there is something that I have been waiting to share for a long time. It’s been weighing on my heart; now is the time to finally let it out. Please hear me out!
Nineteen years ago, Sammy was diagnosed with “Mental Retardation” by a child neurologist at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Texas.
I told the doctor that he was wrong about the Autism diagnosis, just one month before my son’s third birthday.
I remember Sammy attending the “Special Unit” at school at three years old. I recall him being tested at age six and having an IQ of 60.
I recall receiving a letter stating that he had to be admitted to an institution.
I remember getting blamed for his Autism by my in-laws for obviously doing something to cause this and not loving him enough. I was devastated!
I recall my mother’s concern that Sammy didn’t speak until age 5, but my father assured her that he would be the brightest kid in class.
Today, Sammy graduated magna cum laude. He missed summa cum laude by two English classes.
I cried today because my parents did not live long enough to see my son graduate. I cried tears of joy and relief, thinking about all the years of struggles we had to face due to people’s lack of understanding of Autism. My son had to take only one class at a time because of the immense stress and anxiety that came with it. But today, seeing him graduate is a proud moment for me!
I cried tears of joy because I had been waiting for this milestone for years. Today, Sammy overcame all the obstacles and hurdles to reach this momentous achievement. And while many memories were made, the only one that truly matters is that Sammy accomplished it with the help of those who cared. In the fall, Sammy will continue his education at the University of TX, RGV. That day will come, but for today, I am proud to say that Sammy did it!”
