Ride the Motivation Wave

Musings on Medium and life

Life is hard and full of things we don’t want to do. It’s finding that motivational spark that can help us accomplish spectacular things and find peace with the menial tasks.

“The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.” –Buffy Summers

We all struggle with motivation. I’m working on embracing and acknowledging things I don’t want to do. However, we all know the incredible feeling of a burst of motivation.

The key is taking advantage of those times we’re motivated. This will make our actions more rewarding and we’ll be more likely to do them again soon.

I don’t want to clean the house, but just sometimes, I get the urge and I know I need to take advantage of that motivational burst. In that moment, it feels rewarding to do the chore and I’ll be more likely to do it again in the future. In this way, we can condition ourselves to be better at doing things we don’t normally enjoy.

Sure, there are things that we definitely don’t want to do. There are always chores that we detest. It’s finding a balance between knowing what you need to do and what you want to do.

I don’t want to mow the lawn, but sometimes rocking out to my headphones and getting a tan sounds good, so why not mow while I do it? If it’s been a week, I don’t need to mow, but I can if I’m feeling it. However, if it’s been three weeks, I don’t have a choice and I just need to buck up and do it.

How can we apply this to Medium?

I started writing on Medium because I wanted to. I keep coming back to it every day because I need to if I want to do well on Medium.

I don’t have to publish something every day, but if I want Medium to be a hobby with some potential of being a side-gig, I need to spend everyday reading, commenting, and putting some effort into publishing as often as I can manage.

Let’s also apply this to our stories. When we first feel that inspiration to write something, that’s the time to take advantage of it! If I have the time, I sit down and write until the entire idea is OUT.

If we put something on our “to write” list for later, who knows if we’ll have the same inspiration that we’re feeling at that moment?

After the idea is on paper (or screen), we know we need to edit it. This part might not be as fun for some people, but it needs to happen. That’s the balance between knowing what we need to do and doing what we want.

By riding the motivation wave, we’ll appreciate the task and produce better work. We’ll write better stories. We’ll clean more thoroughly. We’ll make our lawn more beautiful. And all the while we’ll enjoy ourselves and be more likely to do these things again soon.
