Rice planting in Vietnam

Bạn ăn cơm chưa? Have you eaten yet?

If you have ever been in Vietnam or Southeast Asia in general, you have probably noticed how important rice is to people.

In Vietnam, people eat rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Like corn in Mexico or wheat in Europe, rice is the main source of energy for Vietnamese people.

In the North of Vietnam where I live, farmers started to plant rice in March. I gave a hand and took photos.

Few weeks before planting the rice, farmers grow rice seedlings next to their home under self-made small greenhouses.

Then they prepare the rice paddy by flattening it and flooding with freshwater.

Tilling the rice paddy used to be done with buffalos, but now farmers have machines to till and flatten the paddy. You can also hire your kids to dig the land; however, they are often inefficient and spend the time playing with the mud.

Once the land is flooded, farmers start pricking out rice seedling in the welcoming paddy.

Later, the landscape green and become very beautiful!
