Revenge Christmas

Flying high

Recklessly, Shannon went driving down the icy country road at a high rate of speed. She was not late for an appointment, in fact she was not in a hurry to get anywhere. She merely wanted to experience some exhilaration.

The holidays had been depressing for her, especially the time spent with family. They were all like complete strangers to her. She could not even remotely relate to any of them. It was like punishment being with them. What could she have done in a past-life to deserve such punishment?

The worst part of the holidays, though, was the fact that her boyfriend dumped her the day before Christmas Eve. He said he needed his space. Seriously? He could not even come up with something original. He had to use that old tired line.

Shannon did not care for a single Christmas present that she received. It proved that no one really knew her. She was just another name on their shopping lists.

She, on the other hand, was an expert Christmas shopper. She always got the most perfect Christmas presents for everyone. She put a great deal of thought into it and she usually started her Christmas shopping in July.

The most perfect and expensive gift she bought this year was for her boyfriend. It sat on the car seat next to her. He sure as hell was not going to get it now.

It was a drone. Her boyfriend, like so many males these days, was a tech/nerd/geek. Countless times he had mentioned how much he wanted a drone. It was the only piece of tech gadgetry he did not own. So Shannon shelled out the big bucks to impress her boyfriend but before he could be impressed he dumped her. She even bought wrapping paper with atoms and molecules on it.

And that is when it hit her. Shannon did not care for any of the Christmas presents she received and she gave some perfect presents to others but she suddenly realized that she never bought a Christmas present for herself!

Like one of those time-lapse photos of a flower blooming, a smile spread across her face as she realized that, thanks to her boyfriend, she did in fact gift herself. She bought herself a drone!

Shannon slowed down her car and began driving more attentively as she proceeded to drive to the nearby lake. Her fondest memories with her boyfriend were when she urged him to drive to the lake so that they could take a walk hand-in-hand on the path that circled around the lake. They stopped often to make out. At first, he did not like going to the lake — after all, it was out-of-doors — but he soon began enjoying it and they were doing it at least once a week.

As she parked in the north parking lot by the lake she was bubbling with joy. Memories of romantic walks around the lake were the furthest thing from her mind. She had always wanted to know what the lake looked like from the air.

Tearing the atoms and molecules wrapping paper off the drone box, she brought the box out of the car and set it on the hood of her car. Opening it, she proceeded to hastily read the directions. Eventually, the drone was up in the air and she began piloting it across the lake while both watching the drone and the live video feed it was transmitting.

Talk about exhilaration! Shannon was buzzing with it. It was the next best thing to actually flying! She flew the drone up and down and in swooping curves and in circles. Who knew it could be so much fun?

But then when the drone reached the south shore of the lake she could see the parking lot at the south end of the lake and she could see that her ex-boyfriend’s car was parked there!

Her spirits abruptly sank. Seeing that there was no one in the car, Shannon wondered if he was walking around the lake remembering all the times they had done that together. Was he missing her? Was he sorry that he had broken up with her?

With her new drone Shannon flew above the pathway surrounding the lake looking for him. She eventually spotted him walking towards where the drone was. And he was not alone! He was walking hand-in-hand with another woman!

That son of a bitch!

She lowered the drone and moved it closer to get a better look. That is when she realized that the woman he was walking hand-in-hand with was Shannon’s best friend Daphne!

That bitch!

With barely a half hour’s worth of experience flying a drone, Shannon suddenly morphed into a skilled fighter pilot. She proceeded to repeatedly dive bomb the unsuspecting couple. She was surprisingly good at it. They were ducking for cover, yelling, waving their arms and eventually they began running back to their car.

After the ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend got in the car and left, Shannon piloted the drone back to her car. Despite the fact that she was laughing uncontrollably, she expertly landed the drone and put it back in the box. It was back on the passenger seat as she pulled out of the parking lot, still laughing uncontrollably.

It turned out that it was not such a horrible Christmas after all. Shannon made a mental note to be sure to always buy herself a Christmas present every year. Christmas was not a time to forget about yourself. Still laughing, she realized that, despite the holidays up until now, she was going to be just fine and dandy…

…as long as she had her drone.
