Returning Home
A Poem
Returning home after a week of unfamiliar, manufactured,
loud and crowded experiences, is surreal —
the house is as we left it, cozy, quiet, clean —
two bedrooms, one bathroom, kitchen, living room,
Oh! My couch is here, my couch that is my desk, my office, and my work space,
my books, my books, all of my books peace, calm, and more exciting than any ride
or sight to see out there in the world of themes, and parks, and attractions.
Yet, home or away, my heart has that anxious twinge,
looking at my daughter, looking at my life, time passes so quickly, she won’t be ten at Disneyland ever again,
she won’t be ten on our family vacation ever again, I make a mental note to enjoy every second more deeply,
regardless of place or surroundings and relax for once,
a week of constant anticipation to go go go my souvenir coffee mug and I are finally home.
