Retail or Racial Ugliness?

Sign of the time, or entitled behavior that has been around forever?

I heard a story that is hearsay, but I believe it to be true based on the times we are in and having worked in retail.

A friend of my oldest son works in a grocery. She is Asian. We’ll call her Vivianne.

My son’s friend was working near the meat section when a woman, we’ll call her Karen for sake of the story, approaches her to ask a question.

Karen asks a question or complaint about the price of meat. Vivianne replies she doesn’t work in that section so she doesn’t have the answer, but she can find someone who can help her who does.

When Vivianne says this, Karen rips off her mask and spits into Vivianne’s face. Karen didn’t rip off Vivianne’s mask.

Vivianne is shocked.

Karen runs out of the store.

Management is advised.

I don’t know what has happened since, but the store has cameras, so I’m sure some sort of report will be made considering the times we are in. Bodily fluids are a source of danger. And, a customer battered a store employee.

Is this something racial stocked by President Trump’s anti-China stance and blaming COVID-19 on the Chinese? Or, because of his “America First” and anti-immigrant stance.

Vivianne is a US citizen and was born here, but she is clearly Asian.

Or, is this just Karen being nasty in a store because she’s entitled and “the customer is always right?”

I don’t think Vivianne’s store has a security guard. When I worked in retail, we had off duty police officers in the store who would have arrested or trespassed someone acting out against other customers or employees.

I loved and hated working in retail.

I had a blast working with everyone in the store. Most customers were great and friendly. But, the few that were bad could ruin the day by their demanding nature. They knew how to make employees feel small and insignificant.

I am glad I worked in a union shop and my managers were really skilled at dealing with difficult people. I know they would ban problem customers from the store if they were anti-social.

The management might let you come back and return your half-eaten frozen pizza for a new one every day of the week, but they wouldn’t let you abuse the staff. It was always a great thing to know the management had our backs.

I hope the Karen is discovered and banned from the store. I don’t know what should happen to her beyond that. It is too bad there isn’t a way to get people who exhibit rage or anti-social behavior some sort of therapeutic treatment to help them handle themselves in public.

Part of me hopes it is just a run of the mill bad customer, but part of me wonders about the demons our leaders have stirred up in their efforts to keep a grip on power they fear losing as America continues to grow and evolve as a country.

Or, it could be a case of someone with mental illness not getting the treatment she needs.

Either way, it makes me sad.

I sense most people are of good will and there will be an end to some of the craziness in the upcoming years. I don’t like hearing about things happening to people just doing their jobs and trying to make money to pay rent and to contribute to society.
