After observing some homeless situations recently, a story was shared about the homelessness continuing in Salt Lake City where the weather can be very cold during the Winter months. Homelessness without being in a homeless shelter can be brutal in the cold weather. Some responses were received.
If you write about homelessness, it is rather unlikely that a homeless person will be seeing and reading it. There are often comments from people criticizing the homeless for being in that situation or the government for not helping them more. Those people might share their views about keeping illegal immigrants out of the country and helping homeless people more. Some said the government should be taking care of their own. They said not to give free aid to other countries and illegals.
There was a comment from a person who said she has a brother who has been in and out of homelessness for years. She has tried to help and has taken him into her home several times. She does not plan to do it again because his lifestyle is completely different from that of her family. He refuses to pay for anything or to help out. She did say that he is mentally ill, but he is unwilling to seek or accept help for his medical problems.
Another person who responded seemed to be a homeless person. He said that being homeless is extremely hard and difficult because the public is discriminating against them. He said these people are strong, smart, and talented and not all drug dealers as perceived by the public. They don’t need people judging them and pointing fingers at them.
Another person suggested that a rich person could purchase land where the homeless could park an RV or put up a tent. [That actually is something that is being done in an area around Salt Lake City where the government or private people are building small houses where the homeless can live. It will only help possibly 100 people, however.] That person who commented said such a situation would help the crime rate go down.
There are many reasons for people to become homeless. It is a difficult situation. Most people have never been homeless and never will be. If we have never been homeless, we should be extremely grateful. Maybe we can help them in some small way.
