Respect Respect

Respect Me — a poem

A LaCharta on humanity

First stanza of poem in author’s hand — photo by author

You don’t know me. You don’t have to. There’s only one thing you must do: Believe me; trust I know what’s true For me. I am not an “issue.” Respect is all I ask: not fear, Not love or favour; just don’t sneer.

I don’t expect you to embrace The things about me you debase, But only offer me the grace That I am of the human race. Respect me for our shared birthright; What does it cost to be polite?

The things we have in common are Far greater than the “culture war”, But you refuse to see the scars Your shame has left upon my heart. Respect me and you will be free From everything you hate in me.

Esther learned to read when she was four years old, and began writing shortly thereafter. She is a Canadian queer Christian poet, crafting with words to create art and music.
