Resolutions for the New Year

Do You Think I Can Keep Them All?

My 2024 Resolutions — Created in Canva by me

I swear, every year, I’m not going to make any new resolutions, and every year I do. It’s like a fresh beginning. It’s like a clean slate. It’s like you feel when you move and have a new house. Now is your chance to do some decorating that, likely, is going to be there ten years from now.

So, here’s what I’m thinking for 2024:

  1. I’ve got an old website that I pay for every year and have not done anything to it in years. It is called EverythingAboutCrochet.com. Originally, I wanted a place to showcase the crochet hooks I was carving from sticks that fell on the ground. Groundfall Crochet Hooks. Groundfall. I sort of like the sound of that. No tree was hurt in the gathering of these sticks. I still have buckets of them around. I’ve even got some that are ready to work on with the bark stripped, and the outsides sanded and smooth. So, that’s a thought. I could even showcase the things I’m making. For instance, I just finished a pair of fingerless gloves for my husband. I worked without the pattern I used to make my fingerless gloves a few years ago. The directions for those gloves seemed too fussy, and, as it turned out, the pattern had a mistake. So, I just sort of winged it on my own. FreeForm crochet. Like when people yarn bomb trees and fire hydrants. Just the joy of crochet.

2. I want to be more responsible about my bookkeeping for the family. Up to now, if there was enough money in the account to cover the monthly expenses, I turned my attention to other things. Right now, with two weeks to go before the end of the year, I am faced with having to do all of 2024. Ugh. So, I’d like to get all that done at least once every quarter.

3. I want to learn how to draw. Again. So, something every day. Maybe I could do a series of ten articles detailing how my skill is growing (again) with ten new drawings each time. Say, I take something simple like an apple or perhaps a tree. Something. I would also love to illustrate my own articles. Imagine that. Sometimes, I spend an inordinate amount of time trying to find that “perfect” picture when, in my mind, I know what it is. I’d like to be able to translate what I want into something that has substance.

4. I would like to get my books published in 2024. To do that, I am going to have to get my author’s website together.

5. I want to work on my long-standing (from 2001) website TalkingToSpirit.com

6. I want to learn how to table tip. That just sounds like fun. I’ve done it before, so I know what it feels like. It’s just that I think I need to know where the energy is coming from. Does it come from me? Does it come from outside? Do I channel it? I’d like to pin that down.

7. I purchased a lifetime subscription to Rosetta Stone a few years ago. That was my incentive to get off my butt and learn some languages. Notice I said some? Spanish, German, and French are the three I have a smattering of, but not enough to have a conversation with anyone. Well, if I was drinking, I could speak German, but sober? Nein, nur ein bisschen. (No, just a little). I would love to speak Italian, and I want to speak Norwegian. Why? Just because. Because there are people who speak those languages, and I would like to talk to them. I don’t know that I could learn all of them in one year. I will start with Spanish. Hasta la Vista, Baby!

8. I’d like to lose a bit of weight. Not all of it, God forbid. Maybe just 20 pounds. Just enough so my feet and back don’t hurt as much.

So, those are the resolutions I can think of right now. That interest me, in any case. Others, like cleaning and organizing regularly without waiting for our cats to knock down various piles, come to mind, but as I have in previous years, I discount them as being not all that important.

I also think that new resolutions can be incorporated into a person’s schedule without causing too much heartbreak or stress. Face it, we’ve all got enough stress as it is. If I were to give an hour every day up to the language learning and another hour to the drawing, I think I could handle that. I’ll tell you what. Come April, I’ll let you know how I’ve been doing. I’ll put it on my calendar to remind me.

So, tell me. It’s the middle of December. What are your resolutions for the coming year?

Thanks for reading.
