Request to My Followers and Medium Writers
I know I am not alone on this one. You and I face the same problem.
If by chance you opened this story out of curiosity, I have a request for you: please don’t clap unless you read longer than 30 seconds.
If you read past the title and the first paragraph — that is it. You are halfway, and just a little patience, my friend, and you have done both of us a favor.
I think every Medium writer by now has grasped how the algorithm works for the most part. For the Partner Program, it requires a 30-second read time to earn money for the writer and publisher.
That means a comment and a clap without reading an article for more than thirty seconds mean nothing for the writer and probably yourself.
It is good — I mean, it feels good that we should all grow together, isn’t it?
‘Clapping’ and ‘commenting’ with a meaningless comment is baiting. If that is what you did, it just doesn’t sound like a scam — it is an actual scam.
To just clap or follow and leave a comment like, “Thanks for sharing, I like this, good article,” is to make your intention known.
And your intention is clear as day.
You needed a follow, and at the same time, you are hoping the person you clapped for on their article will have a look at your work and somehow, that person is a better human being than you — an honest person.
Not only that they will follow you, but even better, they will find your work interesting and actually read it. Or they will read your article out of reciprocity, not knowing that it’s an empty clap and a comment.
It’s true that the work we deliver isn’t of the same level in terms of quality, but the question is, why are you clapping or commenting for something you read past the first paragraph?
It should only be fair that if you intend to clap or comment, please don’t just do it for the sake of baiting. At least, read an actual article for thirty seconds.
That way, you have earned your fellow writer a dime, and you will greatly be rewarded through a follow back and actual read time for your work.
