Repurpose Like Keanu Reeves

Keanu Reeves — we’ll get to him and repurposing in just a moment. But first let’s get started with a quick 13 second video repurposing tip:

Here’s one of my favorite Keanu Reeves quotes:

“The simple act of paying attention can take you a long way.”

For our purposes I’d change it a little bit to say:

“The simple act of paying attention and repurposing what you find can take you a long way.”

There’s a special form of repurposing I call “serial repurposing.” Serial repurposing is when you find a good idea and use it multiple times.

Starting with “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” in 1989, Keanu Reeves has been successful at serial repurposing with at least 3 movie franchises:

• “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” — 1989, “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey” — 1991, “Bill & Ted Face the Music” — 2020
• “The Matrix” — 1999, “The Matrix Reloaded” — 2003, “The Matrix Revolutions” — 2003, “The Matrix 4” — 2021
• “John Wick” — 2014, “John Wick: Chapter 2” — 2017, “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum” — 2019, “John Wick: Chapter 4” — 2022

I think he’s got this serial repurposing thing down.

Some of you might be thinking:

“Yeah, but what about “Speed” and “Speed 2”? Keanu Reeves was not in “Speed 2”. Offered 12 million to star he “just didn’t feel it was the right move for me.”

There’s that “The simple act of paying attention can take you a long way” coming into play as another series came next:

The Matrix

Paying attention and serial repurposing pay off. Keanu Reeves net worth is estimated at $360 million.

Reeves is not the only one who’s paid attention to serial repurposing:

Jimmy Buffett took “Margaritaville” and turned it into a $550 million dollar empire.

Dolly Parton has taken “looking cheap” and well, you know, plus a great heart and voice and turned it into a $500 million dollar empire.

So the question becomes:

What is unique about you, the way you approach problems, and the way you solve problems, that you could turn into a “Serial Repurposing Empire”?

A hint lies in where “what customers respond to the strongest” and “what you love to do the most” cross.
