Republicans: Keep Big Government Out of Our Personal Lives! (Unless You’re Queer)

Or a woman, or a minority.

Republican culture wars are quite an interesting thing to me. They have very little issue beating the drums of war when it comes to fighting “woke ideology” and “critical race theory,” whatever they take those things to mean.

In their crusade, they are more than happy to pass laws banning everything from books to conversations that might make their little white kids uncomfortable. Heaven help if our children learn about things like the actual history of our country and the bodily functions that we all undergo.

If you’re queer, trans, a drag queen, a minority, or some combination thereof, you are clearly a danger to the general public. Women aren’t really people and don’t get to make healthcare decisions about their own bodies, either — only our Republican legislators and politicians, who are generally old white guys, can make those decisions for them.

Yes, Republicans would have the government interfere in all of these things. They are banning books and discussions about race, queerness, and periods, criminalizing drag shows and trans folx, and just generally implementing their puritanical beliefs on most aspects of our everyday life.

Let me tell you, for a party that values small government that stays out of people’s business, individual liberty, and the right to do whatever we want as Americans, they sure are fond of using the government to interfere in all of those things. Unless you’re a straight cis white guy, of course — then you’re free to beat your wife, drive a big ol’ pick-em-up truck that’s modded to roll coal, and buy however many guns you want.

‘Murica!

Yes, the danger to the lives and well-being of our children is clearly drag queens and trans folx, not unfettered access to guns and a culture that encourages male dominance and aggression. Let’s just ignore that our children literally have regular drills to practice hiding from active shooters as part of their schooling — it’s those dang gays that are ruining everything!

Of course, the knee-jerk reaction to all of these things that Republicans are afraid of — LGBTQIA+ folx, minorities, and women with any level of agency — is to ignore two of the major pillars of their party: small government and individual liberty. It’s all for the children, of course — they’re a great constituency that can’t really speak for themselves in these matters.

Except for the fact that the kids are more queer, less white, and more liberal than ever, and a lot of them are sick and tired of being marginalized by old white dudes who are willing to let the children they’re trying to protect die in droves so insecure white guys can have their guns. Having active shooter drills is pretty traumatic, but clearly, it’s the LGBTQIA+ community and critical race theory that is the problem.

I don’t really need to go on much more than this. The right is full of authoritarian fascist hypocrites who would rather give unlimited power to an orange despot than see a woman run this country. They’ll sooner destroy democracy than acknowledge that trans folx are valid, and their claims that they care about the children are undercut by their refusal to do even the most basic things to protect the lives of those children.

So yeah, par for the course then. Just remember: a vote for a Republican is a vote against democracy.

Be well out there.
