Reminiscence
An unknown masterpiece that couldn’t possibly exist in our world
The wind gently kissed the side of my face as I ran down the street of my neighbourhood. The flowers on the trees are starting to bloom, and the music is blasting through my headphones, drowning the sound of my huffing and puffing.
I begin to slow down as the big red sign comes into my view, waiting for the opportunity to take a much-needed rest. I approach the stop sign, maintaining a slight in-place jog as I watch the cars drive past, waiting for a cue from my body to tell me to start running again.
Then for a second, I see you and my heart gets caught in my throat. My body comes to a complete stop.
You turn your face and I guess you see me too. You maintain eye contact with me and for some reason, I can’t find it in myself to look away.
When… did we last see each other?
Memories of us paint canvases within me. Recollecting the feeling of being a part of you.
Inducing in reminiscence of when our worlds collided.
Do you wish they were still intertwined?
Do I?
The abstract of our art keeps me mesmerized, yet our beauty remains an unknown masterpiece that couldn’t possibly co-exist in a world like ours.
Maybe in an alternate piece, where we wouldn’t be in this moment holding our stares from afar but capturing the image of me fitted next to you. Synchronized breaths; my hands tangled in your hair as you focus on letting your creativity flow through the both of us.
The blaring of a car horn interrupts my delusion, allowing me to crash back into reality. My music continues to play through my headphones as I mentally criticize its advertised “noise-cancelling” abilities.
You begin to drive past the stop sign, continuing on your journey.
My body gives me the signal, telling me it’s ready to continue mine too.
Hey everyone, it’s been a while. Felt the creative juices flowing and wanted to get back into channelling this energy to writing. I hope you enjoy this flash fiction.
