Remembering of a Time Long Past

A little meeting with a new neighbor.

Lumbering down the hallway on my Rollator I saw a frail little woman approaching me.

She was also on her Rollator with her assistant nearby. She slowed, raised her hand to her heart and said, “ Thank you for your service”.

It was Memorial Day weekend. I was wearing my World War Two Veteran Cap.

I thanked her for remembering, then she said, “What was your branch of service?”. I told her “Marine Corps”.

Her pale blue eyes brightened. She said “Semper Fi”. I responded “Semper Fi. Were you in the corps?”

“My husband was. He was so proud of being a Marine.”

Judging by the frailness of the woman I said, “Was he in World War Two?”, hoping to make a connection.

She said “No. He was in during the 50s. Oh I am so proud to meet you. You have made my day”. I wish he were still alive so he could meet you. I am your new neighbor, two doors down.”

We parted, went to our rooms. I took off my cap. I was glad I wore in on this special day.

It brought back good memories for a lady in her last days and me in mine.
