Summary

An elderly couple reflects on the simplicity of finding joy in life by appreciating the present and each other's company, reminiscent of the unencumbered joy they felt as children.

Abstract

As they stroll down a country road, a couple shares a moment of appreciation for the beauty of life, recalling the purity of joy they experienced in childhood but lost over the years. Amidst the chirping of birds and the flitting of butterflies, they contemplate the relentless pursuit of happiness that characterizes much of their lives. They conclude that true joy is found in the simple act of being and in the connection they share, suggesting that the beginning and end of life are when joy is most readily embraced without the need for excess.

Remembering Joy

Being in Joy

Holding hands, they walked together down the country road enjoying the crisp morning air and the explosion of birdsong.

“Life is so grand,” he said.

“It is so beautiful,” she said.

Butterflies flitted about in the meadow of wildflowers.

“We knew that as children but forgot,” she said.

“So many years spent trying to remember,” he said.

Two squirrels ran across the road ahead of them.

“Only at the beginning and end of our lifetime is joy enough,” she said.

“We spend the time in between desperately searching for more, more, more,” he said.

The man kicked a rock lying in the road.

“If only we would remember that joy can be found simply by being,” he said.

“And the only thing we need to find is each other,” she said, smiling.
