The man who performed the first successful heart transplant in Australia

Born on November 21, 1936 Shanghai China, Chang’s family migrated to Hong Kong and Australia. He progressed on his medical journey at the University of Sydney, where he graduated with honors in 1958 Dr Chang’s passion for cardiac surgery led him to pursue further studies in the United States and the United Kingdom where he gained invaluable experience and expertise.
One of Dr. Chang’s most notable achievements was his pioneering work in heart transplantation. In 1984 he performed Australia’s first successful heart transplant at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. This groundbreaking surgery marked a significant advancement in the country’s medical landscape and offered hope to patients suffering from end-stage heart disease Dr Chang’s commitment to advancing cardiac care also extended to his role in establishing the National Heart Transplant Program in Australia.
