Remember to Share Special Written Remembrances
Learn how to spread a bit of written joy today
Joy of Writing
There is joy in writing about things that are going on in your life. There is also joy in writing about the lives of others. It is all about sharing. Think of the feeling you get when you get a card, a letter, an email, or handwritten note shared across coffee, lunch, dinner, or even across time.
Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, plus birthdays and anniversaries are typically days to share written remembrances. Still, recently as I moved and sorted through boxes, I found notes from my mother who has passed away, and it was extraordinary to go through those notes and remember what was going on during the time she wrote the letter to me — what a great way to connect with her memory.
Think about those personal communications you have received over your life and maybe even write a short story sharing your thoughts about what you got. You can tuck it away, or you can share it with others.
A top-rated movie that I see being shown frequently on television is The Notebook. That movie is about love letters written that the man now shares (by reading) with his wife, who has Alzheimer’s and is having trouble sometimes remembering even her husband.
It is a very touching story and exciting to see which parts of the old love letters the wife responds to as he is reading to her. The re-connections she can make with her life were terrific and indeed why I think the movie is shown so often and is so popular.
I re-read my letters and cards from mom, and it was like having her across the table from me again. It lessened the feeling of loss at not having her in my life now.
How can you brighten someone else’s day? You might not even know how much they needed just a little sunshine in their life the day they received your communication.
Recently one of my favorite cousins has been sending letters. What a treat to open the message, sit, and read about her activities, and keeping up with her family events. Remembering the things we did at our grandparents when we had family gatherings and fun things we still do as a result of growing up in the same family. Extraordinary ways to remain connected, and even though we live quite a distance from each other, it seems like I am just next door.
Get going by spreading a bit of written joy today, and see how great it makes you feel.
