HALLOWEEN TREATS FROM THE 60S & 70S

Remember ‘back in the day’ when you were kids trick or treating in the 60s or 70s on Halloween? Our Halloween candy was great! It was the real deal. And yes, it was a ton of sugar to be sure. (Some things don’t change, right?) But we baby boomers loved our candy, who didn’t? That’s when chocolate candy bars were real chocolate and much bigger in size than they are today. Who can remember getting a Hersey’s® milk chocolate bar for just 10 cents at the neighborhood grocery store?

TOOTSIE ROLL POPS & CHOCOLATE TOOTSIE ROLLS

And speaking of chocolate, hey, in the 60s, Tootsie Roll Pops® were our ‘go-to’ hard candy of choice. I don’t know about you, but us boomer kids sure did get more for our money. Not only could you buy a Tootsie Roll Pop® for just a nickle (mid-60s now folks), but weren’t they a little bit larger than they sell today? I kid you not, I bought a Tootsie Roll Pop® just the other day while filling up with gas, and I KNOW it's about 1/2 the size I got in my Halloween bag ‘back in the day’!

And let’s not forget about the famous Tootsie Roll® itself. Back in the day, they came in the long narrow variety for just a penny. And if you had a nickle, you could even get a ‘cigar size’ big chunky one. As I mentioned before, they’re much smaller now but the good news is, the flavor is the same and even Millennial kids love them.

WHO REMEMBERS CANDY CIGARETTES?

Now don’t get me started about our generation even having candy cigarettes, but we did and in the 60s, kids thought they were so cool imitating their parents smoking those darn things. I can’t deny. It was fun acting like the movie star, Joan Crawford, slowly taking a puff holding it so glamorous-like.

ONE PENNY BUBBLE GUM

Bubble gum!!!! Oh wow, I can remember opening up a one penny Bazooka® bubble gum piece of candy. Who remembers the comic strip that was actually included! And let’s not forget our yummy FruitStripe® chewing gum. Never mind they lost their flavor in like, 5 minutes or less… lol

CANDY BARS, SUGAR BABIES & ATOMIC FIREBALLS

Other nostalgic candy includes all the different kinds of candy bars we had to choose from. There was ‘Oh Henry’®, the ‘Clark’® bar, ‘Baby Ruth’® and oh yes, don’t forget the ‘Big Hunk’® and everyone’s favorite the ‘Three Musketeers’®. These would definitely give you the sugar high which was the adrenaline rush all kids, young and old, run on.

Who remembers when Pop Rocks® came out in the late 70s? Whoever invented that candy was a genius! It was so cool to have tiny bits of candy just ‘explode’ inside your mouth. And of course, I can’t leave out mentioning Sugar Babies® and how many girlfriends did you know ‘wore’ their colored rock candy necklace before devouring all of them like they were Sweet Tarts® or something?! And my all-time favorite has to be the cinnamon hot Atomic Fire Balls®!

WHAT WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE CANDY YOU GOT AT HALLOWEEN?

Since this is Halloween time, I have a question for all you baby boomers reading this blog. What was your least favorite candy you got at Halloween? Did you try to trade it with one of your brothers or sisters or did you just toss it away? Scroll down and comment on what yours was! And go get yourself a Tootsie Roll Pop® and have the ‘best day ever’!
