Relationship Temperatures
When thermostats get in the way
“Lord have mercy, it’s like a sauna in here!” Brett walked over to the thermostat. “Holy crap! Why is the thermostat set at 73 degrees?”
“I was getting a little cold,” replied Bethany.
“Cold? Are you serious? So instead of cold you decided to be burning hot? That’s five degrees above room temperature, which is 68 degrees.”
“Room temperature is not 68 degrees, Brett! It’s 72!”
“In what country? For me, I am perfectly comfortable at 68. The second the temperature hits 70 or higher then I start sweating like a luau pig.” Brett adjusted the thermostat then went to the couch and sat down next to Bethany, “Darling, if you get cold at 68 — which I cannot even imagine — you can always put on a sweater or something. At 73 I can take off my clothes but I’m still dying of heatstroke. I can’t take off a layer of skin.”
“Well, I can’t imagine being hot at 73. Seriously, that’s just weird.”
A silence fell over the couple as they looked downward into their laps.
Finally, Brett looked up and spoke, “Bethany, I know that everyone says we’re the perfect couple and that both of our names start with the letter B, but I just don’t think this is going to work out. We’re just too different.”
With sad eyes, Bethany took off her engagement ring and handed it to Brett.
