Spring is finally here! After the long, unforgiving winter months, as the sun starts to warm up and there are signs of life everywhere, the first thing that comes to our notice is bunches of bright yellow flowers with sturdy green stems. They are the daffodils.
Daffodils are one of the first flowers that bring in the spring season. The colorful yellow flowers give us the optimism to start afresh. In many ways, daffodils bring in a wave of fresh hope and ideas to us as we begin a new cycle of growth and opportunities.
“Daffodils are yellow trumpets of spring” ― Richard L. Ratliff
Spring epitomizes a new beginning. As nature dresses up in its wild glory, the birds and animals bring life back to the planet, and suddenly there is activity everywhere.
Though daffodils are not as expensive as roses or orchids, it has a special place in every nature lovers’ hearts. Who can ignore the brightness and simplicity of a bunch of the daffodils in season?
It is pure and wholesome and reflects peace and serenity.
Daffodils have been immortalized in the poem of the same name by William Wordsworth-
“I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o’er vales and hills When all at once I saw a crowd A host of golden daffodils Beside the lake beneath the trees Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.” ― William Wordsworth.
I read the famous ‘Daffodils’ poem as a student in India. Where I am from, we use to have a slight sliver of spring followed by a long, sweltering summer season.
Although I had not seen a daffodil before, the poem had me thinking about those golden petals shimmering in soft sunlight and waving in the gentle spring breeze.
I was delighted to see these golden flowers, the first time I experienced spring in the USA.
There is a sense of quiet beauty in the daffodils. No other flower can capture the springtime positivity much as the daffodils do. The yellow and white petals combined with sturdy green stalks complete nature’s refreshing springtime look.
Daffodils are flowers that herald the beginning of the spring season. But there is something more we can learn from them.
Here are some lessons that we can take from these delightful flowers.
1.You must be resilient and never stop growing-
Daffodil’s bulbs divide and redivide endlessly. They often grow in abandoned places where there is no one to nurture them. They are the first flowers to grow after winter and usually start blooming with the last snow bits around. Daffodils teach us to be strong and resilient and to never give up on life.
2.You must not be afraid of the challenging times:
The plants often start to grow when there is winter lingering in the air. They usually grow under harsh conditions before the earth warms itself and gets ready for spring.
3.You must never give up hope-
Daffodil bulbs are sown in the fall. Throughout the long, harsh winter, they stay buried underground only to burst out at the beginning of spring. The delightful flowers teach us patience to bloom in the right moment and to never give up hope while facing challenges in our lives.
4.Beauty doubles when shared-
Unlike the most sophisticated flowers that are high maintenance and adorn the rich and the famous houses, daffodils stay content, spreading happiness and delight to strangers on the road. It can spread sunshine in a hut and make people feel happy with its golden brightness.
Daffodil teaches us to be humble and take pride in our simplicity. Be happy just the way you are. To be unique, you need not be famous. Bring cheer where you are planted, and you shall stay in the memory of others forever.
So, as you celebrate the spring season, get a bunch of these golden flowers to spread some cheer and goodness in your life.
With daffodils, it is never too late to celebrate the magic and simplicity of the spring season.
