REJECTION LETTER- A BNG Submission Call out
DEAR WRITER…. You Suck
Dear Writer (Any creative person who tried something ever),
Thank you… ( We have to say thank you because you have put forth effort… perhaps eeven your blood, sweat and tears… And we have to acknowledge that your name is on a list.)
… very much for submitting to ____________________ . ( Insert Hipster /Millennial/ BAME / LGBTQ+ / Body Positive/ Sustainable “INCLUSIVE” Publication/ Institution).
UNFORTUNATELY… (Stop reading, no good news shall come now. You have nothing we want. You are nothing we want. Why did you even get out of bed today? Is that… you have something in your teeth. If you tried for the first time in a long while, we would like you to stop trying, because everything you might ever fathom to dream you could achieve or become, is false. Because we say so. And we are… the experts… obviously.)
… we are unable to offer you ______________________ . (anything….. We offer you nothing, because we don’t accept you, your work, your voice, your perspective.)
We had an overwhelming response… (We really are as popular and incredible as we think we are. Everyone loves us/ wants to be us…)
The accepted applicants were a much better fit. (Every fear you had about yourself about how you don’t fit in… How you are too … ….weird, obtuse, funky, passionate, ugly, fat, short, dark, eccentric, reserved, skinny, boring, tall, explosive, pretty, ethnic, hyperbolic, posh, dumb, light, bossy, nerdy, mediocre, quirky…)
INSERT YOUR DEEPEST FEARS ABOUT YOURSELF (THEY ARE ALL TRUE.)
We wish you all the best. (We have already forgotten who you are.)
Sincerely, (You suck, )
The Company of Your Dreams and Ambitions (Run by the people you hate most)
This week Shringi Kumari and I were discussing all the things we love about Broads Non Grata. After going through our inbox (long over due), We realised we have new and fun writers waiting to join the BNG community.
So how better to welcome them and reunite the gang, than with a submission callout for Rejection?
We can’t speak for everyone, but what we can say from personal experience is we have both seen a sh*t ton of rejection.
(I have been told what is wrong with me, my body, my talent, and my endeavors in almost every format. Which… why would anyone create an edited cideo to tell someone, no thank you…🤷🏽♀️)
So in true BnG style, why not turn rejection on its head. We would like to call our writers to submit rejection letters of their own. You can write it to whomever or whatever you want, from whomever or whatever you want. They can real or fake… They can be kind, or nasty, they can be whatever you want to say about the act of rejection. The letter could be a story, a poem, a play… a book!
Make it a revolution, rebellion, revelation, rejuvenation. Make it a toy! Our intention is to find playful ways of preparing ourselves and sharing the emotion we often feel in isolation.
Because we both welcome the world’s Rejection.
