Reflections: The Magic Hour

A beautiful sunset in South Goa. Photo by Pooja Sharma.

Sunsets are magical. Sometimes it is a long day ending soon and the golden hues of the sunset add colors to it. The golden hour when the sun is saying goodbye brings a blissful calm. I usually walk or meditate during sunset.

I spent a lovely evening this summer in the South Goa near a beautiful seashore. Time stopped for a few moments. I never watched such a beautiful sunset before. I was there with my family and a close friend. And the moments were etched on my mind forever. We watched the sunset while running around with my little one. A memorable trip with family, there were silent conversations, and I could feel the love that didn’t need words.

Walking beside the seashore I was re-living the memories, of how a beautiful dream was shattered. How I could not deal with the indifference and other negative emotions of others that affected my family and relationships. I was trying to find the answer to what is only learned by either living the ways of the world or preparing to deal with the negativity. I chose the latter. I can ignore the darkness: just observe and let go. It takes practice and I choose it. But I cannot not be myself just to please others all the time, or live fake to win many small battles. Each sunrise, I pray to the Sun to make me better, more patient, and calm to confront any negatives.

Sun, the source of life and everything we can see, hear, and feel, brings light every day. Sun is the God I worship. I pray to the Sun every morning and thank Him for everything.

Meditative evenings around sunset are blessed. Walking, reading, writing and meditation let me introspect and as well connect to the present moment during the golden hour. It is much needed to reflect on the days, months, and sometimes years back to clear the mental clutter. And the magic hour before sunrise and post-sunset are the best times of the day to meditate and reflect.
