Summary

The undefined website presents a Poember November rhyme-prompt featuring a ha'sonnet, a short poetry form, to celebrate the joy and social function of laughter through playful wordplay.

Abstract

The undefined website content introduces readers to a unique poetry form called the ha'sonnet, which is a concise poetic structure consisting of seven lines, as part of the Poember November rhyme-prompt. The piece, written by Selma Martin, playfully engages with the theme of reds and whites, initially suggesting a wine-tasting event but quickly pivoting to wordplay involving puns, jokes, and laughter. The ha'sonnet is a recent invention, created in 2016 by poets MHenry and Grant Hayes on the RhymeZone poetry site and later popularized by WordPress friend Stephen W. Buchanan. The author emphasizes the social, health, and spiritual benefits of laughter and encourages moderation if alcohol is involved. The poem, titled "Reds are Sweet, Whites are Sour," invites readers to a front-row seat in the 'Power Hour' of poetic delight.

Opinions

  • Selma Martin expresses the importance of laughter as a social connector, health benefit, and soul-soother.
  • The author, Selma Martin, cleverly misdirects the reader's initial assumption about wine to focus on the theme of laughter and playfulness.
  • Stephen W. Buchanan, who introduced the ha'sonnet form to the author, suggests that the brevity of the ha'sonnet (seven lines) does not detract from its artistic potential; even a simple plot can transform into 'art in the confines of seven lines and rhyme sublime'.
  • The author endorses the ha'sonnet as a satisfactory alternative to a sonnet when a full sonnet cannot be composed.
  • There is an appreciation expressed for the editors of Paper Poetry for providing a platform where the author's work can be shared and enjoyed on Medium.
  • The author, Selma Martin, wishes the readers miracles, indicating a hopeful and benevolent sentiment towards the audience.

Play on words

I apologize if you thought I was talking about wine. I’m talking about red-and-white puns, jokes, and laughter. Let’s laugh more because laughter serves a social function, benefits health, and soothes the soul. And if there’s alcohol, let it be in moderation.

Ha’sonnets

A Ha’sonnet is a short form of poetry invented in the RhymeZone poetry site by poets MHenry and Grant Hayes in May of 2016.

“They were created in the comments section for the poet Suz-zen’s wonderful poem ‘Farewell, Farewell,’ where Grant Hayes and MHenry discussed what to call four syllable line poems. This led to the additional constraints on the poem creating the Ha’Sonnet form.” ~ muttado.com/about page

It was introduced to me by a WordPress friend, Stephen W. Buchanan, over at his website called Muttado. He says, and I quote:

“It takes some thought but once you start a simple plot can become art in the confines of seven lines and rhyme sublime”

“If you haven’t got a sonnet, a ha’sonnet will do.” ~ Stephen
