A Nice Place to Visit (On the Web)

I love Reddit. If you’ve never been there, it is full of interesting stuff. It’s big. There are expected to be over 1.66 billion users in 2023. There is no membership fee. You do see the occasional ad roll by, but you’re not obligated to read it. I just scroll past them. They do have a Premium Reddit for $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year, and they will cut out the ads for you, but free has served my own purposes for years.

I have provided links to all the different subreddits I talk about in this article.

Reddit has about 130,000 subreddits that are active right now, though there are 2.8 million subreddits on record. Each subreddit is about something: cats, dogs, recipes, crochet, freeform crochet, AITA (Am I the asshole?), which is tremendously entertaining.

I originally went to the Reddit website looking for other psychics. Have a look in the Mediums subreddit. There are many subreddits for folks who are learning languages like Spanish, French, or Italian and other subreddits for folks who want to meet native speakers to practice the languages they are learning. There is a subreddit for all things Stephen King.

To keep order, there are moderators, much as Medium has editors. None of those folks, as far as I can tell, get paid.

The usual rules apply. Don’t be stupid, and no hate speech.

Yes, there are dumb subreddits and some that are NSFW (not safe for work), so use your own judgment.

Most of the subreddits I’ve stumbled on are just interesting. There’s a fun one called Coolguides. Some are funny, some are cute, others are useful. There is one for Excel that has 634k members, for Quickbooks with 17k members, and Math Help with 36.7k members. Many that I belong to are entertaining and grist for the mill for articles I write. I just counted, and I belong to 72 different subreddits. The ones I’ve mentioned here are just a few of them.

I’ll select a few of my favorites to talk about.

As a writer and fan of historical tidbits: Medieval Life, Old Recipes, and Archaic Cooking.

There are many food-related subreddits: Tip of My Fork (asking for help to identify food), Food, and Breadit (making bread) are some of the ones I go to.

There’s a subreddit for Medium Posts, and others for writing with 2.8 million members, and grammar with 112k members.

You can upvote or downvote the posts. Many have photos, which is always fun. My name on Reddit is u/pmevanosky if you want to look me up. The u in my name means I am a user. Presently, I have a Karma of 2,905, which is a combination of the posts I’ve made, the comments I’ve made, and any awards I gave or received. The larger your Karma, the more you participate.

It’s a lovely time waster of a site. Not as bad as the social sites. Just interesting and grist for the mill if you’re looking to write an article about something. The only thing I might mention is that you might set a timer for an hour so you don’t find yourself still there three hours later.

Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed yourself. Please Clap, Comment, Follow and Subscribe.
