Red Lines & Reflections
The Role of Self-Reflection in Genuine Expression

I started my day with that existential question: what is the real me?
Is the ‘me’ people see, the ‘me’ people read, and the ‘me’ people hear real?
Or is it a collection of memories from those who came before me — their sights, words, and sounds?
I grappled with that thought a bit and then thought,
What better way to gain clarity about something than to write about it?
Grammar Gods vs. Inner Voice: Are External Forces Stifiling You?
In the midst of emptying my purse of jumbled thoughts onto the page, I noticed numerous red lines appearing. Ah, the mighty spell & grammar check gods!

I reviewed the suggestions, but they just made me think more about my original question. Am I watering down the meaning of my initial message?
It’s incredible how the world can sometimes feel suffocating, restricting us to conventions and societal norms. Sometimes, I sense this when writing, which goes back to how I was taught.
Some conventions and norms can be useful. And yes, knowing the basic rules of writing is essential, but relying too heavily on them can become a box or cage that limits us from reaching greater heights with our creativity, self-expression, and learning more about ourselves.
This concept can apply to any form of expression.
I came to the conclusion that although our past experiences and relationships may have influenced us, this doesn’t mean we are intentionally copying others.
External factors such as applications, books, or people can be helpful, but they can also discourage us from honestly expressing ourselves. These forces may encourage us to conform to the status quo, preventing us from reaching our full potential.
The Big Three: Questions to Spark Your Inner Dialogue
Far from wanting to stir up a storm of life’s big questions, I wanted to use this as an opportunity to explore my inner self. This is why I believe self-awareness and mindfulness are important.
Much of this involves letting go of the status quo and learning to listen and really hear what your inner self is saying or even seeking.
In those quiet moments of self-reflection when I’m chatting with myself, a few searching questions arise:
- What am I truly feeling? This allows me to connect with my emotions and detect any underlying currents.
- What are my genuine thoughts? Thinking about this allows me to see if there are any gaps (like things I’m trying to hide or obscure) or patterns in my thoughts.
- What do I want to convey to the world? I ask this question to discover what resonates most with me.
Tossing these questions around in my mind helped me get to know the person in the mirror better, like giving the inner me a big, warm hug.

Perhaps your inner self could use a hug today, too. Give those questions a whirl, and see where they might take you on your path to genuine self-expression.
