Red Light Entertainment

Simple. Unadulterated. Fun.

I pulled up at a red light yesterday and casually glanced over toward the car next to me. At the same time, the young black driver in that car glanced back at me and we locked eyes.

Without warning, he stuck his tongue out at me so I stuck my tongue out back at him. We both started laughing.

Now it was ON.

He cranked his music and our tongue-sticking-out exchange turned into a full blown car dance off, which I’m pretty sure he won even though I did my best.

It felt like that light stayed red forever while this imaginary competition was going on.

Finally, the light turned green.

We shrugged our shoulders, waved goodbye to each other while still laughing, and that was it. We both drove off, never to see each other again.

This is a reminder to take time to find and create joy in the world, even if it happens to be at the next red light.

Life is too short to be miserable.
