There are many reasons to adopt an older dog

If you’re thinking about adding a pet to your family, please give serious consideration to adopting an older dog from a rescue organization.

You may not have them for long, but you’ll love every minute you have them.

Here’s a video of Doodles, our quirky little senior poodle we adopted from Florida Poodle Rescue. Doodles weighed 5 pounds and was found in a dumpster. Our vet estimated her age at about 12; we had her for two years before she died peacefully in my arms. She would attack the exterior doors when we would open them.

Here’s Peaches, who dances for veggies. Peaches was an ower-surrender to Florida Poodle Rescue (but there’s not an ounce of poodle in her). Our vet estimated her age at 6–7; we’ve had her 7 years now. She’s aging with grace and charm.

This is Peaches with Sadie, also from Florida Poodle Rescue, rolling in the grass. We don’t know about Sadie’s backstory, other than she was about 10 when we got her and was afraid of men, but she immediately trusted my husband. We had her for about 5 years before we lost her to congestive heart failure.

Some benefits of adopting older dogs through a reputable rescue:

  • They’ve spent some time with a foster family who has been able to give them a complete evaluation. You know what you’re getting.
  • You avoid the puppy stages of housebreaking and chewing.
  • Purebred dogs are abundantly available, so if you want a specific breed, you can probably find it.
  • Rescued dogs seem to know they’ve been rescued — and their loyalty is immense!
  • You’ll feel good knowing you gave an older dog a second chance.

Adopting an older dog doesn’t necessarily mean a geriatric dog. Rescue groups have plenty of middle-aged dogs who need forever homes.

Puppies are precious, but the love from a rescued senior dog is priceless.
