Recharging

A powerful and free cure

Yesterday was my day off from my job. I always look forward to my days off because then I can spend most of the day writing. I usually get about four times as much writing done on my two days off than I do the other five days of the week combined.

But yesterday I did not write a single word. Not one!

And it was truly wonderful!

I booted up the old laptop and came to Medium. It is a daily thing. But yesterday after doing some browsing and reading for about fifteen minutes all I wanted to do was leave and shut the laptop down. I realized that I needed to do some recharging.

I am an extremely solar human! If you ever wanted to kill me all you would have to do is lock me in a room without windows for about three to four days. After the first day without life-giving sunshine I would be starting to go certifiably cuckoo. After the second day I would be drained of all energy and I would be almost suicidal. After the third day I would be all shriveled up and on my deathbed. It is very unlikely I would survive the fourth day. That is how crucially important sunshine is to me.

My mood and energy swings with the pendulum of seasons. In the winter, when there is very little sunshine, I have little energy and it is difficult to get excited about anything. In summer, when sunshine is abundant, I am filled to the brim with energy and excitement. Back and forth. Back and forth.

I am obviously NOT a vampire.

After the especially brutal winter we just had in my neck of the woods, I have been feeling depleted. The recent changing of the clocks also threw my rhythms out of whack. Like I said, I desperately needed recharging.

So I shut down my laptop and never turned it on again for the rest of the day. I went for a walk out in nature. It would be the first of four walks that I took yesterday.

Luckily, we had unseasonably warm and sunny weather yesterday. There was not a cloud in the sky all day long. With temperatures in the upper seventies (Fahrenheit), it was the warmest, most delightful, day we have had so far this year. It was so nice to go out-of-doors without a jacket or coat, wearing only a thin short-sleeve shirt (and pants, of course). For the third and fourth walks I switched from long pants to shorts and I did not even bother putting on shoes. I just wore my flip-flops.

And the birds! Oh, the birds! The birds were holding a major whoopjamboree yesterday. They were singing like there was no tomorrow. There is no more exhilarating and rejuvenating sound on this planet than birdsong! I could feel my energy rising just listening to the beautiful music. As a bonus, I saw a very large number of robins. Around here, the appearance of robins is one of the first signs of spring.

During my second walk, as I was luxuriating in birdsong, I passed someone else who was going for a walk — or least walking. They had ear buds implanted in their ears and they were obviously listening to music on their ipod or some such device. They were not reaping the full benefits of walking because they were oblivious of the powerful music that the birds were providing. Why would someone deprive themselves of the magic elixir of birdsong?

After that second walk I came home and took a long nap. Right in the middle of the day! It was wonderful.

For my third walk I decided that I needed a park bench. Anyone who has read my blabberings knows that I am a big fan of park benches. Sadly, the town in which I live has very, very few park benches and what few that exist are congregated into just three small locations. After switching into short pants I walked to the nearest park benches which are located in the downtown park.

It was after four in the afternoon and the park was quite filled with people — mostly children. This park has a playground area with swings and see-saws and jungle gyms and slides. It was swarming with kids, all of whom were screaming at the top of their little lungs.

How wonderful!

While birdsong is extremely healing and empowering, so is the sound of small children playing. Both sounds are the expression of innocent joy.

So I sat down on a park bench with my back to the playground. I rolled my shirt sleeves up over my shoulders to increase the amount of skin exposed to the sun. I stretched out my legs and rolled up the bottoms of my short pants a little bit. It would be the very first sun my legs have received this year. I then took off my glasses and put them in my shirt pocket.

Leaning my head back, I closed my eyes and let the sun pound my face with full force. I could feel the sun on my face and arms and legs while at the same time I listened to the delightful combination of birdsong and ‘childsong.’ I sat there like that for a little over half an hour. It was so incredibly healing.

Today I feel wonderful and my energy levels have significantly increased. Of course, I know that to return to full power I am going to need several more sessions of solar rejuvenation. If the weather cooperates I may be back to normal in just a few weeks.

Hallelujah for Springtime!
