Receiving Advice: Accept Sometimes & The Other Times Do You

There is a time to listen to others, and there is a time to listen to the voice within yourself

Many well-intentioned folks will advise you on how you should live your life. The choices they tell you to make might be right for them, but it doesn’t mean they are right for you. Assume that their intention is positive. Graciously say thank you. And then consciously choose to do whatever the hell you want to.

People Tell You Who You Should Be

People have told me there is no future in writing, no money in teaching, no real opportunities in personal training. Other times, people have told me I should do x, y, and z because I fit the mold or look a certain way. According to some people, I should be a professional bodybuilder, a model, a basketball player, or a finance manager. But none of those are the routes I’m taking. I choose a different route. I choose my way, but I appreciate their input.

People Tell You What You Should Do

If you ask for feedback, you most certainly will get it. People love giving feedback and offering their criticism (more than they like receiving it).

The question is, should you apply their feedback to your life? Sometimes, yes. Other times, no. Learn to distinguish between when you should listen to someone else and when you should listen to that voice inside yourself.

Value your truth. Value your opinion. Value your voice.
