Antonio Pierce’s win-loss record as interim head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders improved to 2–0 Sunday night as they defeated the New York Jets, 16–12.

Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell, in only his third career start, completed 16 of 27 passes for 153 yards and tossed a game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Michael Mayer in the fourth quarter. While Mayer finished the game with three catches for 19 yards, wide receiver Davante Adams led the team in receptions with six for 86 yards. Running back Josh Jacobs punished the Jets’ defense with 27 carries for 116 yards.

The Raiders’ defense, plagued by penalties and sloppy play for much of this season, looked magnificent as they held the Jets to only four field goals. Linebacker Robert Spillane led the unit with seven tackles, one sack, and one interception. Defensive end Malcolm Koonce recorded a sack as well.

Meanwhile, Jets quarterback Zach Wilson completed 23 of 39 passes for 263. yards. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson led the team in receptions with nine for 93 yards while tight end Tyler Conklin added seven catches for 70 yards. Running back Breece Hall led the team in rushes with 13 for 28 yards.

With this second consecutive victory, the Raiders’ win-loss record this season has improved to 5–5. Pierce’s charisma, optimism, and football knowledge as a former NFL player has re-energized the team, one that had appeared demoralized after an embarrassing loss to the Detroit Lions two weeks ago. Their character will be tested Sunday when they face the red-hot Miami Dolphins, who are ranked first in the AFC East division at 6–3.

Can the up-and-coming Raiders defeat a superior foe in a tough road game? Maybe. Maybe not. Either way, that question will be answered shortly.
