Reading is Everything
My thoughts on the value of reading.

As an avid reader, of course, I am going to celebrate the power of reading. In my life, my relationship with books has changed from loving them as a child to loathing them as a teenager and back to being obsessed with fiction as an adult. Books have played a big part in my life so far, and I have even started writing some myself.
Here are three reasons why I believe reading is everything.
1. Literacy is powerful
Throughout history, those who could read have held positions of power. In a feudal village, it would have been the priest that you went to if you needed something reading and make sense of. The wealthy had access to education, and politicians used their literary prowess to their advantage.
These days levels of literacy still vary greatly around the world so I feel very privileged to have learned to read fluently and be able to engage with the incredible literature that we have available in our abundance of books.
2. Reading opens doors
As well as giving you better career chances, reading books enables you to widen your awareness of the world. It takes you on a ride to foreign places, helps you to understand different cultures and ideologies, and opens your mind to lands that are purely fictional.
When reading widely, a person is more likely to see things from different perspectives. Books like ‘Heartstopper’ have enabled readers to consider the feelings of those in the LGBTQ+ a community, for example. Also, some contemporary books explore characters who are put in dilemmas where they have to consider their mindsets and question their political allegiances.
3. Books are the best gifts to give
I don’t just read fiction as I love to learn new facts all of the time. Non-fiction texts can be exciting to read as they can shine a light on fascinating subjects and are often perfect for feeding curious readers who want to expand their minds with knowledge.
In my experience, a well-chosen book -fiction or non-fiction- makes a brilliant present. Children love to read a new book several times, and repeated reading is great for building vocabulary familiarity and knowledge of rhyme, punctuation, and construct. Adults generally love a good story, and some are hooked on fact-finding. As with anything, know your audience.
Summary
Hopefully I made my point pretty clear. As a teacher and writer, I have come to see just how wonderful books can be. Of course -let’s be honest- some books are a bit of a letdown. That is just the way it is. On the whole though, books are eye-openers; personalised reflections on lives and dreams.
