A brilliant story by Stephen King. Weird, interesting, and a great story to read.

‘Rose Madder’ by Stephen King

I have never read any of Steven King’s novels, so I decided to start reading them. I didn’t want to start off with anything too scary, so I picked ‘Rose Madder’. It’s a more subtle creepy story than some of Stephen King’s other stories. It was originally published in 1995.

‘Rose Madder’ is about a lady called Rosie Daniels whose being abused by her Policeman husband. She leaves him and ventures out into the world on her own after fourteen years of being in an abusive relationship. The story moves on as she makes her life her own again but her husband is a brilliant tracker and he is determined to find her. He is a violent and sick man who will do anything to get his wife back. Even die for her!

The story gets interesting when Rose finds a painting that she likes, which has a name on the back of it saying ‘Rose Madder’. She becomes attached to it whilst in the shop and she cannot take her eyes off it, so she gets it. The painting becomes interesting to her and peculiar. Things start to happen with the painting, which scares Rose. Her problems get worse when she realizes that her husband, Norman is tracking her and he is getting nearer every day to finding her again.

Creative Writing Boost

When I read this book I had a pencil next to me to underline anything that stood out. For instance, I would underline the imagery of his words. If you notice something that stands out either a description or a character that you will remember take note of this for your own creative writing. I don’t mean for you to copy it but to notice how he creates imagery as the story moves on. Imagery is something that is used a lot in fiction. We need to learn how to use it. Notice how Stephen King uses it by underlining his words. Do it with any book you read and see how often imagery is shown. Imagery is usually used for setting, characters, action, and even speech. Learn how to creatively read books and your own fiction writing will improve.

In ‘Rose Madder’ imagery is used for the painting she buys. It is such a clever idea.

Conclusion

I found this book to be very readable and I could not put it down for a second. Stephen King is a brilliant author and he knows how to pace his words as he writes. He is a writer with a knack for making his writing stand out when it comes to horror.
