Rayne vs. The Machine: Who Wrote It Better?

Image generated by Nightcafe AI under author’s direction.

Author’s note: This is an experiment. I wrote a mashup story and then I gave all the same constraints to ChatGPT and asked it to write a mashup story as well. Below are the two stories. Your challenge (should you choose to accept it) is to let me know in the comments which one you think was written by me and which was written by AI. Good luck to all of us!

Story #1:

Once upon a time, there was a magical kingdom where everyone had the gift of gab. Conversations, debates, and arguments were an everyday occurrence, and people cherished their ability to speak. One day, a wicked sorcerer came to the kingdom, and with a swish of his wand, he cast a spell that silenced every individual.

The citizens were horrified as their voices disappeared, leaving them speechless. They looked for ways to reverse the spell, but nothing seemed to work. After months of desperation, hope appeared in the form of a young inventor named Leo. He constructed a gigantic robot, hoping it would generate enough energy to break the spell.

Leo and his robot embarked on a mission into the sorcerer’s lair. When they arrived, they found two buckets that were empty, but Leo soon discovered that they could become full if he spoke the word “water” over them.

As they made their way through the maze of corridors, Leo suddenly found a lily pad, which he picked up and kept close. The sorcerer soon appeared, and a fierce battle began. Just as Leo and the robot were about to be defeated, Leo remembered the phrase “war and peas,” which he muttered under his breath.

Everything stopped. The sorcerer was frozen, and Leo realized the oxymoron had stopped the battle. Leo used the chaos to break the sorcerer’s staff over his knee, and the spell was broken. The citizens rejoiced as their voices returned, and they honored Leo as a hero.

From that day forward, Leo carried the lily pad wherever he went, as a reminder of the power of words and the strength of the human spirit.

Story #2:

Once upon a time, in a far-off land, there was a magical kingdom that had undergone an initially friendly takeover and was now at the mercy of an Evil Power. The Evil Power used its own magic to take away the citizens’ ability to speak, making it impossible for them to cast any magical spells against it.

Fortunately, the kingdom had a young prince named Frederick, who was eager to prove himself a hero. He knew that the key to defeating the Evil Power was to take down the giant robot who did its bidding.

Prince Frederick used the largest lily pad he could find to make a disguise and follow the robot, undetected. He watched from the safety of the lily pad disguise as the giant robot walked to a nearby farm carrying two empty buckets. It moved from row to row collecting peas. and the buckets slowly filled.

Prince Frederick was appalled. His citizens needed those peas! They were the citizens’ greatest resource! Taking the peas was clearly an act of war! A war on peas! WAR AND PEAS!

Prince Frederick threw off his lily pad disguise and raced back to the castle where he promptly sat down at his writing desk. He composed a short and urgent call to arms requesting immediate support from the neighbouring kingdoms.

At the stables, the prince gave copies of the letter and a list of names to four of his most reliable messengers. There was no way to communicate verbally, so the prince gestured with his hands and imitated the giant robot so the messengers would understand the importance of their mission.

A day passed. Then two. Then five. Every day, Prince Frederick watched under his lily pad disguise, powerless as the giant robot stole more bucket-fulls of the kingdom’s magical peas. He was beginning to give up hope that his letters would be answered.

On the ninth day after the prince sent the messengers, the skies erupted with the flash and flap of scaly wings. The dragon riders from the Northern neighbour arrived, with their king in front riding the largest dragon of them all.

The neighbouring king’s dragon riders made short work of the giant robot. They came at it from above, and even though it was huge, it was no match for the magical abilities of the riders or the metal-shearing claws of the winged beasts.

As the giant robot fell, the force of the Evil Power began to fail as well.

“Thaan… Oouu..” Prince Frederick’s voice was croaky from lack of use. He tried again:

“Thank you!”

“My pleasure!” Replied the neighbouring king, “I wish you had asked for help sooner!”
