New Music

Rate-A-Record: New Songs by CHVRCHES, The Wild Things & Nicky Youre

Give them a listen and then let us know how you like them

In the past, I’ve mostly focused on choosing old or little known songs for the Rate-A-Record challenges that I’ve created here for my fellow music lovers. While I’ll still do it that way from time to time, I also want to spend more time delving into New Music Releases.

Since Friday is the main day each week that new music is released, I thought it might be fun to explore brand new songs on Fridays, asking people to listen to 2 or 3 of them and then rate the songs on the Rate-A-Record scale of 35–98.

I’m not saying I’ll do this every Friday going forward for the rest of my life, but I’ll try to do it at least on a semi-regular basis.

The songs below were all released TODAY — Friday, February 24, 2023. Give them each a listen and then rate them in the comments section.

Over — CHVRCHES

I only know a handful of songs by this band, but I like just about everything I’ve heard by them — including this one.

Heaven Knows — The Wild Things

As I’ve written elsewhere, I’m crazy about the music of The Wild Things. They’ve recently opened for The Who and KISS during concert tours and I think it’s not going to be too long before they become very popular.

Shut Me Up — Nicky Youre

I never heard of Nicky Youre until this morning, when I was looking through today’s list of New Releases on Spotify. I played this one and instantly liked it. It’s a fun pop song with a nice, catchy beat. The music video is a lot of fun too!

My ratings:

CHVRCHES: 85 The Wild Things: 95 Nicky Youre: 82

So, what do you think of the above songs? Let us know, using the (somewhat odd) 35–98 ranking system!

Tagging some of the other frequent Rate-A-Record writers and game players here, but ALL who are are reading this are invited to play along with us!

Terry Barr, Paul Combs, Arpad Nagy, Kevin Alexander, Francis B., Laura Lind, Amber Walters, Kerry Purvis, Robert Gowty, Alex Markham, Steven Hale, Anthony Overs, Jeffrey Harvey — and the late Dick Clark, who started the whole Rate-A-Record thing (though he’s probably not on Medium.)
