Rate-A-Record: How Would You Score These 2 Songs?

Are these tracks more than “a good beat you can dance to?”

Photo: Getty/Michael Ochs Archives

Growing up, I would watch American Bandstand every week, but I don’t remember the “Rate-A-Record” segment. Maybe I was too young, maybe the memory faded, or maybe after hearing “It’s got a good beat and I can dance to it,” one too many times my mind blocked it out?

Either way, once Terry Barr (re)introduced it to us all, I had to jump in. The rules are simple:

  • Listen to the 2 songs below
  • Rate each on a scale of 35–98. No, I don't know why those are the numbers.
  • Share why you rated each song the way you did.

Scritti Politti- Perfect Way (1985)

In 1985, Green Gartside and Scritti Politti released Cupid & Psyche 85. Four singles were hits in England, but the fifth — Perfect Way — only managed to make it to #48. It was met with a warmer reception on this side of the pond, peaking at #11, and becoming the band’s biggest US hit.

I got a perfect way to make a new proposition I got a perfect way to make a justification I got a perfect way to make a certain a maybe I got a perfect way to make the girls go crazy

What say you? Snappy beat? Can you dance to it?

World Party- Way Down Now

In the late 80s, Karl Wallinger left The Waterboys and struck out on his own. World Party was essentially a solo project of his. 1990’s Goodbye Jumbo was their second full-length record. The album was generally well-received, and the lead single “Way Down Now” spent 5 weeks atop the Billboard Alternative Songs chart.

Did it deserve to be there? Is it a 35 or a 98? will Thursday night and Friday really be on Tuesday night instead?

The clocks will all run backwards All the sheep will have two heads And Thursday night and Friday Will be on Tuesday night instead

Thanks for playing! Be sure to weigh in picks by Paul Combs here, as well as Steven Hale’s pairing.
