Random Acts of Kindness Can Be the Antidote to Too Much Introspection
So here are 12 ideas for starters
Do you ever find that too much time alone, spent thinking, can make all the small problems and struggles feel much bigger and heavier?
We all need to look inside ourselves at times. Pause, check-in, and ground. But, sometimes we do a little too much of the checking in, without spending enough time grounding by taking in what is around us.
Taking in what is outside of ourselves is the best way to check that our reality is in balance with the world around us.
The best remedy for overdosing on introspection
Introspection is something that most people can spend a great deal of time on. And, I would say, we have all had a little too much opportunity to go inward over the last couple of years.
While I believe that self-reflection, in the right sized dose, is a wonderful thing, too much inward-looking can draw us into self-pity and self-sabotage. This is why I find that the perfect remedy for too much inward-looking is to focus on what we can do to give to that outside ourselves. To fully engage in making the hearts of others smile, whether humans, animals, or plants. After all, we all thrive on a bit of love and kindness.
Why specifically ‘random’ acts of kindness are so good
The best thing about ‘random’ acts is that they have not been planned. Which is what makes them random.
Being spontaneous is the opposite of being in that heady space where everything we do is overthought, over-deliberated, and over-planned. Taking action without too much thought or planning teaches us to be more open to influences beyond the normal and mundane to guide us.
Some call this The Universe, others call it God, and yet others call it Source Energy.
Whatever you call it, being open to it makes you feel freer, lighter and happier.
Random acts of kindness can be the perfect antidote to self-absorption when you find yourself sliding into that heavy, introspective space.
‘Random’ also applies to the recipients, for you may not even know who will benefit from your kindness. Instead, you have put it out into the world and the satisfaction comes from simply knowing that it will be received.
It’s not about being thanked, it’s about the subtle energy exchange.
So, the next time you find yourself caught up in your own problems, try something from this list of 12 ideas to pull yourself out of it:
- Go on social media and pay genuine compliments to 10 different people.
- Help a neighbour; offer to cut their lawn, weed their garden, or walk their dog.
- Go for a walk and smile at everyone you pass.
- Compliment a stranger — tell them that the colours they are wearing really suit them, or that they have a beautiful smile. Just make sure that it rings true for you.
- Paint some pebbles in bright colours and place them in random places.
- Make 20 little cards and write “You are loved” inside each one, and then place them in random places. Eg, stuck to a bench, wedged in the crack of a wall, and so on.
- Set up a bird feeder in your garden.
- Create a bug haven out of deadwood (which will also serve to feed birds).
- Bake a cake for a friend.
- Write to someone who you haven’t contacted in a while, and tell them that you appreciate having them in your life.
- Organise a fundraiser for a charity that you would love to support.
- Leave an extra big tip for your waiter/waitress the next time you eat out.
Kindness is the fuel of a potentially never-ending cycle of gratitude and connection.
Bringing a little bit of thought, care and joy to another is so incredibly uplifting that you just can’t help but see your own problems shrink when that happens. Even if you don’t see the nourishment that an act has brought to someone, there is still the knowledge that someone, somewhere, is grateful.
Somewhere in the information field, your energy was felt and acknowledged by another.

Each day, during the Christmas period, I am sharing a piece of writing on kindness. All money raised from reads and coffees during this time will be donated to help feed those with less than enough.
