Ramadan Kareem to All of You Guys
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched — they must be felt with the heart.” — Helen Keller
Today is Ramadan, a special month for many people worldwide. During this time, folks often do acts of worship, prayers, and fasting. Fasting means not eating or drinking from sunrise to sunset.
Let’s not get into religious talk today, though. I don’t really like discussing that.
Instead, let’s talk about how Ramadan is full of love and tolerance for family. Lately, families don’t spend as much time together, and that’s sad. Sometimes, people think the older generations are better than the current ones, but I don’t get why.
I really enjoy celebrating Ramadan with people, no matter what their beliefs are. The best part is when families gather around one table. It’s so special, and I wouldn’t trade those moments for anything. Family time during Ramadan is truly wonderful.
During Ramadan, many people sleep in the early morning. For those who don’t know, during Ramadan, people stay up late watching special TV shows. In places like Dubai and other Islamic countries, it’s well-known that there are lots of these shows. Families come together to watch them and enjoy tasty Arabic sweets, which everyone loves.
In the morning, some might still be asleep, but around 12 or 1 o’clock, they wake up. Both men and women cook during Ramadan. Women go to the kitchen, while men might buy the best meats, fish, rice, and couscous. Cooking during Ramadan can take a long time. Some start cooking at 1 o’clock and continue until sunset, especially when making traditional dishes passed down through generations. These dishes are special, as they carry the love and blessings of our ancestors. It feels different and wonderful when we gather at our grandparents’ house during this time.
The feeling you get with your grandmother, the warmth and love she puts into her cooking, that’s the same feeling people experience during Ramadan. I’m not sure if everyone agrees with me, but that’s how I feel right now. I’m in a country where today is the first day of Ramadan, but there are other countries like those in East Asia that consider Tuesday as the first day. It doesn’t really matter.
I’m talking about Ramadan as a month, away from religious discussions. I prefer not to talk about religions or my own beliefs. I believe the world belongs to humanity as a whole. But the feeling of Ramadan is truly beautiful. I want to wish a generous and blessed Ramadan to the whole world, not just Muslims.
I hope this month brings you joy, family gatherings, and of course, delicious food. During this time, I’m not a big fan of working because I like to feel as if I’m back in the 1970s and 1960s, a time of intention and blessings, just like our ancestors lived.
This story comes straight from my heart. I wrote it with a smile on my face, imagining beautiful, soothing music from over 30 years ago. I penned it with love and care, hoping it brings a smile to your heart as well. Yes, I’m smiling from every part of my being, and I hope it touches you because it truly comes from my heart.
