Writing Prompt
A Sense of Purpose
Quote Prompt №13
I am back with a new quote, and I hope you all will participate! I have loved reading your poetry and thoughts on these prompts.
Welcome to Quote Prompt № 13!
This week’s quote called to me not only because of the amazing author of these words and the book they come from, but also they remind me to go ahead and start again. I have honestly been in a stuck place. Mourning fatigue, the awful state of our world, and my often sense of futility during this pandemic has gotten me down. I have found myself exhausted after working through two items on my father’s estate to-do list. I mean two small tasks: sending a check to the attorney handling the estate and signing a form send me back to bed with Netflix and popcorn (and an attitude of “I can’t even…”).
Monday I go back to work. By back to work I mean I go to my school to teach summer workshops rather than teach on-line and work from home. My son will be there at camp all day too. I am worried about the exposure to people of course, but we have strict day camp social distancing and prevention of virus protocols all set up. I am having to rethink everything. There is a closeness in teaching. There is an intimacy in a teacher-student relationship that helps students learn. Kids touch each other. I have no idea how I will keep them compliant.
This is going to be really hard, but I am ready to leave my nest. If anything, it will prepare me for August, when the whole school will function under these new protocols. I will get used to wearing a face covering. But mostly, it will give me a sense of purpose, which I hope will start to set me free.
I hope everyone reading this (and those not reading it) are staying safe and healthy! And please, wear your mask.
Here is the prompt:
“He allowed himself to be swayed by his conviction that human beings are not born once and for all on the day their mothers give birth to them, but that life obliges them over and over again to give birth to themselves.” ― Gabriel García Márquez, Love in the Time of Cholera
