Quora Is Ending Its Partner Program

“The program did what it was supposed to do.”

Yesterday, I received an email that Quora’s Partner Program was being discontinued.

“Thank you for being part of the Quora Partner Program. Your efforts over the past 4 years really made a difference for Quora and we love hearing about the difference the program made in your lives. We are proud of the work we’ve been able to do together and now it’s time to move on. The Partner Program for Quora in English will end on September 1 and we hope to work with you in other programs or in other languages where the Partner Program remains active.”

To be honest, until I’d received the email, I’d forgotten I was in the program and hadn’t published a question in over a year.

My experience in the Partner Program

A little over two years ago, I received an email invitation to join Quora’s Partner Program. In this program, partners get paid to ask questions to the Quora community.

Payment is based on how popular your question is. Quora pays you a small portion of the ad revenue your question generates. The more views, the more ads, and the more money.

Despite the hope offered in the email that some partners were earning $1,000 per month, I never reached that level of success. It turns out thinking of useful questions to ask Quora users that were not duplicates and not easily found by searching Google was a lot more trouble than I expected.

The times I did come up with a question, it was often answered with hostility, most likely from someone tired of seeing the barrage of paid questions showing up on the platform.

What did I make in over two years in Quora’s Partner Program?

I made a whopping $4.28 from asking 42 questions.

Most of my questions generated no money, despite getting some ad impressions. My most successful question was about Harry Potter. At $3.14, this one made up the bulk of my earnings and makes me wish I would have thought of more Harry Potter questions.

Why did the program end?

According to a post from William Gunn, the Head of Communications at Quora,

“The program did what it was supposed to do in the English language version of Quora, which was to get more good answers written to questions that we know people are searching for but which hadn’t yet been asked on Quora, and so it was time to bring it to a close.”

Gunn also reminded users there are other ways to monetize on Quora, which you can read about here.

I won’t get paid by Quora

Sadly, I haven’t collected a penny of my $4.28 because Quora requires you to accrue $10 before being paid, and they won’t even take your Stripe or Paypal information until you reach $5.

What about you? Do you write for Quora? How do you feel about the Partner Program ending?
