Abstract

The narrative "Quicksilver" is a 50-word microfiction piece that follows Sandy Schmetterling as he encounters a life-altering event. After cutting his finger and observing a silvery substance dripping onto his desk and into his veins, Sandy is greeted by a disembodied voice congratulating him on being selected for an upgrade. Despite his protests, the voice assures him that the transformation is complete and irreversible. This story is a response to the Seedling Challenge by Bradan Writes Stories, aimed at developing fiction writing skills, and is also inspired by Zane Dickens the Instigator's "Call to adventure" post. The author invites readers to explore more of their fiction work on Medium.

Opinions

  • The author presents the theme of involuntary change, suggesting that transformation can be both uninvited and unstoppable.
  • There is an underlying tension between the character's desire to maintain their current life and the external force imposing change.
  • The story implies a sense of inevitability in the face of larger, perhaps cosmic, forces at play in an individual's life.
  • The use of a disembodied voice hints at a possible science fiction or supernatural element within the narrative.
  • The author's participation in writing challenges indicates a commitment to honing their craft and engaging with the writing community.

Now a silvery substance was dripping onto the desk from Sandy Schmetterling’s cut finger…

…and snaking along his veins.

“What the heck…?” he yelped.

A voice sounded:

Congratulations. You have been selected.

“For what?”

Upgrade. The world is changing.

“No… I don’t want… I like my life!”

It’s done, Sandy.

Prompt: This ‘dribble’ (50-word story) was written in response to Bradan Writes Stories’s Seedling Challenge:

I was also thinking of Zane Dickens the Instigator’s Call to adventure post.
