Quarantine Diary, week three
Monday, Mar. 30
The shelter in place order has been extended at least through the end of April. Muni Metro subway service has been suspended indefinitely, with busses substituting for light rail. It’s strange not seeing the N Judah train running on my street.
I’m supporting my neighborhood restaurants that remain open by ordering takeout a few times a week and leaving them a larger than usual tip.
I had to get out and get some exercise, so I took a walk up to Haight Street. The street was pretty empty and lots of stores are boarded up.

Almost every tree in my neighborhood is flowering.

Tuesday, Mar. 31
I went to the grocery store this morning. The line to get in extended around the corner, but it moved pretty quickly. They allow one person in for every person who leaves, with a maximum of 20 in the store at any time.
I’ve started reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, which I’ve wanted to read ever since I heard about it. I finally figured out how to link my library’s web site to my Kindle account, so I could read it on my Kindle. I couldn’t get it to work with the Libby app, though.
Wednesday, Apr. 1
One year ago on this day I started my job at Medium. I was let go in November.
Now my stove won’t light and the igniter doesn’t click. I won’t risk calling a repair person now so I either troubleshoot it myself or live without it until the quarantine is over.
I stayed in the rest of the day, except to pick up dinner and for a short walk in the evening.
Thursday, Apr. 2
Another uneventful day. I cleaned the house and only went out to pick up dinner and for a short walk in the evening.
I ran out of cleaner for my Swiller WetJet, so I figured out how to open the sealed un-refillable bottle by soaking it in hot water to loosen the top and filled it with Method all-purpose cleaner diluted with water.
Friday, Apr. 3
I had to go to the grocery store and Cole Hardware this morning and I found that they no longer allow reusable bags.
I had a video interview this afternoon. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Our washer & dryer were delivered, but they haven’t been installed & the old ones haven’t been taken away.
Saturday, Apr. 4
Today is Desi’s birthday! She turned one year old. I gave her a few new toys.
I got an idea for a fun new app based on a public API. I already have it mostly working.
It rained most of the day so I stayed in and only went out to put out the trash.
Sunday, Apr. 5
It rained again this morning, but I went out for a few errands.
One of the owners installed the washing machine & dryer. They’re a newer model and slightly lower capacity than the old ones, but none of the larger ones would fit in the existing space.
