Summary

The article advocates for a focus on quantity over quality in creative work, suggesting that producing a large volume of content is crucial for discovering one's strengths and allowing the audience to decide on the value of the work.

Abstract

The debate between prioritizing quality or quantity in creative work is a significant one among creators. The author argues that for online writers, it's more beneficial to prioritize quantity, as it allows for experimentation and discovery of what resonates with the audience. Quality is still important, but it doesn't always correlate with the time spent on a piece. The author cites historical maestros like Bach, Picasso, Shiki, and Tezuka, who were prolific in their output, suggesting that creators should not be afraid to produce a large body of work. The article emphasizes that life is about trial and error, and that creators should let their audience engage with their work to determine its merit. Additionally, the author notes the flexibility of revising online content, implying that perfection is not required at the outset.

Opinions

  • Quality is important, but quantity is more advantageous for online writers to understand their strengths and audience preferences.
  • Spending more time on a piece does not guarantee that it will be perceived as high quality by others.
  • Creators should produce a large volume of work to increase the chances of success, similar to renowned artists and writers who have a vast collection of work.
  • Audience feedback is essential in determining the value of creative work, and creators should not shy away from producing "cheap pieces" as part of the creative process.
  • The iterative nature of online writing allows for continuous improvement and revision of published work.

Quality VS. Quantity as a Creator

Should we pursue the quality of our work or the quantity?

This is one of the hottest topics to discuss among creators or with people who try to achieve through their creative works. As a creator, no matter whether you are full-time or part-time, should we focus on the quality of our creation, or should we try to produce as many creations as possible?

The quality of your work is very important, but I believe that it is better to focus on quantity rather than the quality as an online writer.

You don’t know what you are good at

When it comes to online writing, it is difficult to know which post of yours will be popular unless you publish lots of them. If you have an experienced editor, you may be able to seek their advice. If not, you need to try to write as an experiment so that you can find out which part of your writing is acceptable by the most people. You can analyse the result of your experiment and you will then be able to focus on the subject that you are best at.

I think you need to write as many as possible, especially when you start writing. Frequent writing also helps you make writing part of your routine.

Good quality is not equal to spending time to create

When you want to create something high quality you may want to spend more time than usual. However, the creation that other people think is high quality is not always the thing that you spend the most time to create.

I used to paint when I was a student, as I wrote before :

I sometimes spent lots of time to paint, but the picture which I was most confident with painting was not always the one which got the most applause. On the contrary, the paint which I didn’t spend much of my energy got the best reputation.

How many artworks did the world-famous maestros produce?

We may be familiar with their names and some of their creations, but they are just the tip of the iceberg. Why shouldn’t we create a greater number of pieces?

Some people say that you should create good quality ones and not just create cheap pieces. I agree with them to some extent. We can’t just create rubbish every day, but I think it is also important to let your audience choose which they like and which is not so nice.

Life is a repetition of trial and error. Plus, you can revise your writing online after you publish it as often as you want.
