PW Monthly Theme for August 2023

What is freedom?

Welcome to your favourite home of all things promptilicious, wow, what an incredible month of exciting and impactful prompt responses we had in July. It never ceases to amaze me how diverse and limitless PW writer’s imaginations are.

Our brilliant Ravyne Hawke is still on a small break from editing and I’m sure you’ve notice her writing up a storm recently, which I know we are all excited to see, but while she is taking that time to focus on her work, I am here to serve as your lead editor and will be again providing you the theme for this month, which will be:

What is freedom?

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you read those words? Is it a sensation, like the wind in your hair or the moment when you close your eyes but open to the touch of the elements on your skin?

Do you think of escape? And escape from what or whom? Do you need to break free or where you born free?

What would your life look like if you had more freedom? What would you change and who would you be?

Were you once not free? What changed?

Is your freedom or sense of it shaped by the world or people around you, or does it grow from within?

How To Use Monthly Themes

1. Write specific poems, fiction, essays, or articles related to the theme — try using the Writing Sparks.

2. Choose a Weekly prompt or select a Writing Spark, and center your piece around the theme.

3. Remember to tag your work appropriately (Poetry, Fiction, Essay, or Articles) and use ‘Monthly Theme’ if your work is centered around the theme.

Writing Sparks

1. Are you free to speak your mind? In what ways is your voice imprisoned or given room to fly?

2. Is freedom physical or part of your inner world? What physical circumstances hold you back or limit your freedom?

3. Can anyone be truly free in the modern world?

Bonus Prompt — Consider the following quotes:

Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes. — Mahatma Gandhi

You wanna fly, you got to give up the shit that weighs you down. — Toni Morrison

People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use. — Soren Kierkegaard

Have a creative month, I can’t wait to see your responses!

Important Reminder

The prompts here at PW aren’t here to stress you out, we create them to inspire you when the muses take a holiday. You don’t have to try and keep up with them or respond within a set time. They are here whenever you’re ready and the right words hit you at the ‘write’ time.

Best Wishes
