‘Big Girl Panties’ by Stephanie Evanovich — a book review
I have listened to several books which YouTube has classified as ‘mystery, thriller & suspense’. I don’t know how an audiobook classified as ‘romance’ ended up in my recommendations. The title instantly drew my attention, and soon I was immersed in the book!
About the author, Stephanie Evanovich
I was surprised to find very little about Stephanie Evanovich, regarding a bio. This is what I found on Goodreads:
Stephanie Evanovich is a full-fledged Jersey girl who began writing fiction while waiting for her cues during countless community theater projects. She attended New York School of Film and Television and acted in several improvisational troupes and a few small-budget movies, all in preparation for the greatest job she ever had, raising her two sons. Now a full-time writer, she’s an avid sports fan who holds a black belt in tae kwon do.
Every other site I checked when googling her name had exactly the same bio, or a shortened one based on the above. On Goodreads you find a link to Stephanie Evanovich’s own website, but the link is dead, the same with the link to her Twitter account.
When googling the author’s name, I also got hits to another author: Janet Evanovich. I found an article which mentioned fans of Janet Evanovich asking questions about Stephanie Evanovich, since a famous heroine in Janet’s books is Stephanie Plum. After some confusing messages, it was finally cleared up when Stephanie Evanovich revealed she’s Janet’s niece.
‘Big Girl Panties’ is Stephanie’s first book, and published in 2013. Logan Montgomery is the main character, and two more books followed with this character: ‘The Sweet Spot’ (2014) and ‘The Total Package’ (2016). One more book appeared after that, in 2019: ‘Under The Table’.
‘Big Girl Panties’ — a feel-good plot
If you need to read something to leave you with a good feeling, then this romantic comedy is for you. I listened to this book on my walks, and sometimes couldn’t help bursting out in laughter!
The main characters in this book are Holly Brennan, a widow, and Logan Montgomery, a personal trainer. They meet on a plane, both traveling back home. Logan judges Holly on her appearance, and instantly feels bad for it, so offers to be her personal trainer. You could see that as an insult too, but Holly, much in need of human contact and a change in her lifestyle, takes him up on his offer.
She meets his closest friends, Chase Walker, and his feisty wife, Amanda. Chase is a star baseball player, and soon Holly attends many of his matches, and some of their parties.
Logan subjects Holly to intense workouts and gets to know her witty nature. One place in the book where I laughed out loud is where she explained the term ‘snail trail’ to him. Their workouts get more intense, and soon move on to being filled with passion.
Holly’s confidence grows and her body and mental state changes for the better, and more men notice the beautiful woman. Logan, who has never wanted to commit to a woman, fights the feelings inside him.
Then Holly makes plans to go back to Canada to care for her parents, after she and Logan have a huge fight.
Predictable, yet fun!
You can say that the book is predictable, as sometimes it’s easy to guess what comes next, but the way it has been written, the wit of Holly’s character and the frustration of Logan when she does something unexpected, make you want to read (listen) on.
This book will make you laugh, and even wipe away a few tears.
