Publishing with One Thousand and Beyond
Want to write for us? Here’s everything you need to know!

One Thousand and Beyond is the brainchild of Mark Ellis.
In 2020, he began publishing videos on YouTube. After just one year, the Mark Ellis Reviews channel had gained over 22,000 subscribers, 1.7 million views and more than 158,000 watch hours.
This isn’t normal for a brand-new channel, but it is the result of a clear strategy for channel branding, content and audience building.
One Thousand and Beyond is a Medium publication dedicated to helping YouTubers achieve similar success. Mark writes on it regularly, but he’d love your help.
If you run (or use to run) a successful YouTube channel and have advice, tips and tricks you’d like to share with the world, One Thousand and Beyond is the place in which to do so.
Who can write for One Thousand and Beyond?
Anyone!
If you have learned anything about YouTube that you’d like to share with other creators and help grow this wonderful community, you’re the perfect fit for us!
The topics we accept
One Thousand and Beyond is here to educate, inspire and motivate YouTubers, therefore the content we publish needs to scratch those three particular itches.
We love:
- how-tos;
- guides;
- top tips;
- insight;
- tried-and-tested strategies;
- YouTube origin stories;
- tales of YouTube wins;
- tales of YouTube failures; and
- reviews of YouTuber tools.
We don’t publish:
- advertorial content;
- anything that isn’t related to YouTube in some way;
- general, run-of-the mill digital marketing advice; or
- sponsored posts.
That said, if you think you’ve got something that doesn’t fit into any of the above categories, we’d still love to see it, so do send it over.
What we expect from your stories
We simply want clear, actionable advice for YouTubers that is well-written, considerately formatted and interesting to read.
You needn’t be Shakespeare or technically perfect — you just need to tell a good story and leave readers with advice on which they can act.
Stories that are successfully published on One Thousand and Beyond are:
- completely original;
- free of spelling mistakes;
- grammatically correct;
- well researched (or the result of personal experience);
- nicely formatted (see below); and
- not full of self-promotion.
External links are absolutely fine (although please don’t go too mad). The same goes for affiliate links (but you must note at the footer of the post that they’re included).
Here are two examples of Mark’s stories to give you an idea of the approach we’re after:
How to format your stories
Formatting on Medium doesn’t have to be difficult, which is why we don’t expect you to spend a tonne of time on yours.
All we ask is that you get the basics right. Which includes:
- a clickable title;
- a short, enticing subtitle;
- an engaging image (either original or from stock — but please use the image caption to credit the image, even if it’s your own);
- bullet points and numbered lists where appropriate;
- headings for each section; and
- a separator before each section.
Again, please check out Mark’s examples above to see how we’d like your stories formatting. We don’t have time to heavily format your stories, which is why you’re far more likely to be welcomed onboard as a writer if you do it yourself.
How to publish with One Thousand and Beyond
If you’ve never published with us before, just email a link to your Medium story (either published or draft) to:
It typically takes us around two to three days to get back to you, but it can happen a lot quicker. If you don’t hear from us after a week or more, please assume that you weren’t successful this time around (but don’t stop trying!).
If your submission is successful, you’ll be added as one of our writers and can then add your future stories to One Thousand and Beyond, directly from the Medium editor. They’ll be quickly checked and published for you.
Lastly, we recommend sending us an unpublished draft, because this usually helps improve your story’s visibility within Medium’s algorithm.
Anything you publish through One Thousand and Beyond is still yours — you will always own the rights to it.
We look forward to seeing your submissions!
