Publishing Can Be Frightening, but it’s More than Worth it — The Ink Well podcast

Meet Medium’s author, ex-teacher and a dear friend, Jake FM.

The vision

Writing on Medium is a journey. We walk through deserts and steppes, cross continents, climb mountains and fall flat-faced every once in a while. Experiencing the ups and downs in one’s writing is inevitable. Actually, we couldn’t know that there’s an ‘up’ if there wasn’t a ‘down’, could we?

For me, the most pleasant part of this journey is not the scenery, even though it can be extremely pretty. It’s the community, the people that we meet, and the walks that we take together.

Walking for long distances can be exhausting. It can even get a bit boring, but, if you have a companion, time flies much quicker.

That is why I have decided to talk with other authors here on Medium and learn about their paths.

More about Jake

Our today’s guest is a writer, ex-teacher and current public information officer from Japan, Jake Gakuji Tobiyama (Jake FM).

Moving to live in Canada early on in his life, Jake had a chance to become well-versed in foreign languages such as English and French. Being a child of first-generation immigrants made him question his identity as a teenager.

‘Who am I? Am I Japanese or a Canadian?’ Jake’s conclusion was that he’s a human, just like the rest of us, the perfect conclusion to draw in this circumstance.

Later on, Jake came back to Japan and assimilated back into its culture. Nonetheless, everyone who has lived abroad for quite a while knows that after some years elsewhere, one will never be the same.

A wide cultural baggage can be either a blessing or a curse, it just depends on how we will use it.

Getting involved in teaching, Jake continued his exploration of other cultures. Teaching abroad in China, Australia and Taiwan broadened his horizons even further and now, he has once again come back to bring his findings back to the land of the rising sun.

The topics present in our talk

From reading Jake’s articles I can see that the topics that intrigue him the most are #humour, #horror, #Japanese culture, #photography, #poetry and more.

In our conversation, we had a possibility to discuss some of these themes, as well as explore Jake’s motivation to write, introduction to Medium, and journey as an author.

Also, we’ve talked about the new emerging technologies and their likely outcomes, Jake’s plans of writing a book, and advice for new authors.

A big thanks

Talking with Jake was a lovely experience. I am very glad that I’ve had a chance to interview him not just once, but twice! As Jake has remarked, the journey of writing on Medium is definitely worth it, especially, for the people you meet.

Thanks again, Jake!
