Psychic Awakening: Taking a Peek Behind the Veil

I had my first near death experience at the age of four.

I was violently ill with chickenpox, and a secondary bacterial infection took hold. Within just hours, the flame of my life began to flicker. My small body buckled under the weight of the world, and I was rushed to the hospital.

Once in the ER, I struggled against the nurses as they tried to put an IV in my arm. I screamed for mercy like I was being tortured. “Help me! Help me, please!” I shouted.

“We are trying to help you!” the doctor explained…

But I was beyond consolation. Desperate to break free, I felt panic tear its way through me. And in the frenzy of terror, I began to lose consciousness.

Then suddenly, I disconnected from my body. My awareness and perspective shifted. I was no longer struggling on the cold table: now, I was hovering above my body — watching myself thrash about. I could clearly see each of the nurses and the doctor as they held my arms and legs down. I floated there peacefully — completely separate from the helpless child below. All the while, someone dressed in white (whose face I never saw) hovered beside me: their great body eclipsed mine…

This is one of my earliest memories: and it forever changed me.

Since then I’ve had literally hundreds of astral projections and out of body experiences — and I’m not alone. Millions of people the world round have directly perceived the illusory nature of this thing we call “reality”.

Now, you might think that someone who’s witnessed the supernatural firsthand would be well aware of the momentous gravity of their discovery. But the truth is, people who’ve had transcendent experiences don’t necessarily define them as such.

It’s only natural to take one’s own existence for granted; so much so that even extraordinary events seem commonplace. Once the mind is accustomed to the fantastic, great revelations and divine truths may go unnoticed. So What Is a Psychic Awakening Anyway?

There’s a lot of talk these days about spiritual awakenings, and I’m so glad people are attuning to the vibrations beyond the material plane. But today I’d like to talk about a lesser known (far more elusive) phenomenon: psychic awakenings.

I define psychic awakenings as spontaneous occurrences that plunge you into a whirlwind of extrasensory perception (ESP). An onslaught of mystic information is downloaded into the psyche, channeled directly by unseen cosmic forces. This process, this initiation into the mysteries of the Universe can be gradual and gentle like a baby rocking in her crib, or it can be violent and vast as the raging sea.

As you become aware of the subtle miracles of life, your understanding of the world undergoes radical and frequent shifts, leaving you feeling confused (at best) and utterly terrified (at worst). Some examples of extra-dimensional perception include (but are not limited to):

• Encountering a haunting or paranormal activity
• Out-of-body and near-death experiences
• Vivid dreams, lucid dreams, and/or astral projection
• Clairvoyant visions (like seeing auras or flashes of visual information)
• Visitations by deceased loved ones or disembodied beings
• Precognitions (or premonitions that foretell future events accurately)
• Firsthand encounters with the “clairs”: clairaudience, clairsentience, claircognizance, clairalience, clairvoyance, clairgustance, clairtangency, clairempathy
• Picking up on information about another person’s life that they did not openly share with you
• Speaking your will into existence only to find that what you desired came true (manifestation/ prophecy)
• Experiencing non-ordinary, altered states of consciousness
• Witnessing a miracle (like instantaneous healing or near-death rescue)
• Telepathy or communication with other minds across space and time
• Siddhis (or otherworldly powers and insights gained through religious devotion)
• The list goes on…

How Psychic and Spiritual Awakenings Differ

Spiritual development has no direct link to extrasensory episodes. You needn’t hear, feel, or see beyond the ordinary to deepen your connection to the Divine.

In the early stages of spiritual awakening, the luminous nature of your inner-world intensifies as you challenge the sanctity of the half-truths you once held dear. No longer willing to play along with materialistic consensus culture, you begin to suspect that conventional knowledge is not as grand as it seems.

Awakened souls believe there’s something more “out there”… But people who’ve encountered the paranormal *know* there’s something more out there — and they’ve observed it directly. Believing in the ethereal is not a matter of faith for an intuitive: when you can literally sense other planes of existence, you know (beyond doubt) that your subjectivity can access other ways of knowing.

Now, I create this distinction for the sake of understanding, but it is quite possible that a person can undergo psychic and spiritual illumination simultaneously: it is also possible to go through one, but not the other. The Soul is inherently expansive and pays no respect to finite boundaries; so the dawning of pure awareness can take on any number of forms.

And I must make it clear, all sacred rites of passage are of equal value — no one is more important than another.

I’m taking this time to zero in on supernatural phenomena simply because they can be quite difficult to endure. And though becoming attuned to ethereal frequencies is often romanticized in New Age spaces, very little support is given to those who have begun to display signs of mediumship, clairaudience, or telepathy.

Aside from this, the skeptical world of materialism only believes in what can be reproduced in a lab; so, it can be an uphill climb to find validation and support that is compassionate and sincere. At times, a sense of desperation settles in as young intuitives search frantically to uncover the whats and whys of ESPs.
